My phone buzzed. I pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the screen. A text. From Kayla. I frantically opened up my messages and saw what she texted. "Almost home." I freaked out, Kayla had gone missing. For four months. I quickly texted back, "Where are you? How close are you?" I waited a few minutes. No reply. Then I saw that Lilith texted me. Lilith is one of my friends, one of Kayla's friends as well. It read, "Did you just get a text from Kayla?" I replied with, "Yeah, did it say almost home?" I waited until she replied. "Yep, and then she didn't reply when you texted back?" I sighed. It's like she can read my mind. "Yep. But isn't it weird she texted? She's been gone for months!" I waited as she was typing. Kayla had been gone for long enough that the local police reported her dead. Dead. We had a funeral a week or so ago. "I know, but she must be alive." I sighed and laid back on my bed. "Yeah, I gtg tho, text you later." I typed. I shut off my phone and looked at the ceiling. Kayla was alive. I had to tell everyone.
I ran out of my room and to the living room. "Mom!" I called out.
"What is it, Sarah?" My mom asked, walking out of the kitchen and to the floor in front of me.
"Kayla's alive," I said.
"How do you know, you said that a week ago after the funeral," mom said, putting her hands on her hips.
"No, I just got a text from her," I defended, "And Lilith did, too."
"Really? Show me," mom said.
"Ok," I said. I ran to my room and grabbed my phone and turned it on and to messages. I pulled up my conversation with Kayla and ran back to the living room. I showed mom the text and her eyes widened.
"Maybe, there were kidnappers and they took her phone," my mom breathed.
"Kidnappers wouldn't text 'Almost home'," I pointed out.
"True, let's call Kayla's parents," mom said, pulling out her phone and dialing their number. She held the phone up to her ear and started talking to Kayla's mom. I sat down on the couch and sighed. Kayla was alive and I knew it. Now all we had to do was find her.
