I woke up from a nightmare and decided: I needed to be alone today.

The recent events made my heart grow an urge to step back, think, and make good use of my time for once instead of being locked in a castle. Volterra seemed to have an abundance of sights and rotting here, waiting for Demetri was starting to get to me so it was time to do something else. Other than see Caius, or kiss Caius, or try not to give in to my stupid heart.

I had to sneak out of the room at an odd time in the morning, hoping so desperately that Caius meant what he said last night, that he'll be out for a few hours to tend to important matters that seemed dire enough for me to know. I suspected it had something to do with me and two vampires that made my blood boil.

My breathing evened as soon as I reach the elevator without any trouble. It stopped at the top floor, leading to a lobby where my feet paused as soon as I saw the human receptionist sitting behind the counter. She doubled back, and shook her head. "What?" I muttered, hoping she'd enlighten the way she's always looked at me since. As if she knew something about me that I didn't.

"Yes, Ms. Clearwater?" The woman perked up, closing a book in front of her with a sudden air of attention.

"Do you want to say something to me?" I asked, scanning the nameplate in front of her. "Heidi?"

"I don't think so, Ms. Clearwater." She smiled, though there was an edge to her tone. "I'm just surprised they let you out of the cage."

"I'm surprised you've stayed despite the incorrigible disrespect at keeping you in without the slightest taste of immortality." I shot back, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "I'm sure that sucks."

Her face reddened, shock written all over. I smiled and wave, going my way when she spoke again. "They're gonna lock you in a tower and I'll be out here with my mortal freedom while you rot in a room with no windows. I'm certain that's gonna suck. Athenodora thought so."

"Athenodora?" I asked, confusion rising as she left her counter and approached, her bright orange dress swishing with her movements. Heidi grinned as she walked past with key dangling in her fingers.

"I expect there'll be another you in a few years," she said with a cold, dismissive tone. "Right now, you're the shiny new toy. But soon, you'll lose your novelty, just like she did." A lump formed in my throat as I watched her open the door and laid her hands. "Doors will close at eight, Ms. Clearwater. Have fun!"

Her words left me feeling dizzy and disoriented as she purposefully exited the lobby, leaving me in stunned silence. I forced myself to step outside, eager to feel the sun on my skin, knowing that collapsing here could lead to even more trouble. Every step was a challenge as I thought about what she said: Athenodora, a locked tower—nothing made sense. I needed answers, but without Caius, I was left to fend for myself. Determined to make the most of my time, I pushed myself to stay focused, even as I braced for the questions that lingered at the back of my mind.
