I finally got back to the dorm and I'm exhausted. I threw my bag on the bed and sat at the edge. Tanya isn't back yet, I reached for my phone to call her but she didn't answer so I just left her a message.
"Where are you?"
I sent the message. No response. As I expected, I'll try calling her later once I freshen up. I lay on the bed for a few minutes trying to rest. I closed my eyes and thought of the happenings today. I did follow Kit to the cafe he said he was at because it started to rain. I didn't want to go there anymore but I didn't also want to leave the mall just yet. When I got to the cafe and found where he was, he saw me and grabbed his bag from the chair in front of him and set it on the floor so I could sit. I did.
"I went to the other bookstore I saw before coming here. Thinking that at least they have the book series I want and they didn't" I said when I sat down. I reached for a tissue and wiped my face with it since I got rained down a little.
"The bookstore on the other side? I have a story about that place" He said with a smile as if once again trying to relive that moment. I listened as he told me the story. In between the story, he fed me a slice of cake. I was shocked as always but I ran to my mind that he was just like that. That he's just that friendly. I didn't want to assume anything about that gesture. He tried to feed me once again while continuously telling the story, but this time I refused. The cake was too sweet.
"So have you read those five books?" I asked.
"Of course I did. It was worth the purchase" He said and finished the cake himself.
We decided to leave and go home for the day. It was already evening. The wind blew cold so I pressed my hands together and raised them to my mouth to blow on them. Rubbing in between blows. I rested them back on my side when Kit suddenly held my right hand. Again, I have no idea if he's aware of his actions.
OMG, what is happening? Should I pull away, should I complain, what do I do?
I couldn't decide so I did neither. Walking while holding hands with Kit, I'm trying to act cool about it. Trying to show that it's normal in a way. Is it? Somebody answer me. Does he do this with his other friends? I thought. I never saw him hold Brooke's hands since I met him nor does he do it as well with Tanya. I guess that's a different approach, he and Tanya don't get along. But it's because of Tanya and Brooke that I got close to Kit. We sometimes hang out during break and since Brooke and Tanya are the chatty ones. Me and Kit just go along with their conversation.
There were times that Kit and I couldn't even speak to each other if both of them were not around. Awkward I guess or maybe because we're just both introverted. I have no idea. So during that situation, Kit holding my hands was alarming for me. I have no idea what's running on his mind or mine. We left the mall and separated when we got back on the campus and headed back to our dorms. And here we are.
After freshening up, I checked if Tanya messaged me and she still hasn't. I'm worried, I know she stays out a little longer than me, but still. I started to dial. Her phone is ringing but she's not answering. Where is she? When I was about to send her another message, she sent one first. It says that she's out with a friend and will be back in an hour. Okay, I guess. At least she finally texted back. It made me a little less worried, but I think I'll wait for her till she comes back.
I lay on the bed and started to scroll. I encountered a video about books, of course, what's new. Then I remembered the book that Kit was talking about earlier. I messaged him.
"The book"
He saw the message immediately and sent a few pictures. Pictures of his other book collections that he was also talking about earlier. I swear, I know I said that we started awkwardly, but I didn't imagine that he'd be this chatty. I scanned through the other books he sent and saw a title that caught my attention.
"What's the book entitled Beneath the Moon?"
"A collection of short stories and tales from around the world"
"Can I borrow it as well?"
"Just remind me again"
"Sure. That one and the one you were talking about"
As I sent that last message, the door opened and Tanya came in. I checked at the time and it was ten o'clock. I thought she said she'd be back in an hour. Anyway, at least she's back.
"Hey..." I said and sat down.
"You waited? We have an early class tomorrow you didn't have to wait for me" She said while taking her shoes and making her way to her bed.
"Meh, then let's be late together" I teased. The atmosphere feels tense. "You ate?" She asked and I shook my head no. She has this disappointed look on her face.
"Ow don't give me that look. What about you, have you eaten?" I asked back, annoyed.
"No," she said with attitude.
"See." I lay my head back on the pillow, rested my right arm on my forehead and closed my eyes. Tanya pulled my sheet away and grabbed me by the wrist. "Hey!" I complained. She started to grab her purse and we headed out the door.
"Where are even gonna eat at this hour?" I asked rolling my eyes at her and pulling myself from her grip. We continue walking until we're outside the building. It's cold and I didn't have time to grab a jacket. I cross my arms to keep my hands warm.
"Where do you think, the convenience store obviously," she said, answering my question from earlier. We walk on the way to the convenience store. "You know that Alexander is gonna lecture us once he finds out that we ate at a convenience store three nights in a row, right?" I said as we entered the convenience store.
Alexander is our friend, but we have a different schedule from him. We keep in touch as much as we can. I'm not kidding when I said that he's gonna lecture us when he finds out about this because, when it comes to health, Tanya and I couldn't care less about ours, but he does.
"It's okay, we deserve a little bit of lecturing from him anyway," I thought about what she said and I agreed. We haven't seen Alexander since the semester started, but we occasionally exchange messages. Haven't hung out in person though. We paid for the food we bought and returned to the dorm. We played a random movie on her laptop and ate until we fell asleep.
