"At least dip your toes into the water," Kate laughed, as she pleaded to the small brunette who trailed behind the tall woman as she dragged her through the bustling Hawaiian beach."You know I'm not exactly the ocean's number one fan," Lucy pouted as her eyes wandered ahead, the endless sea of mystery greeting her sight.
She tightened her grip onto the taller woman's hand.
Kate couldn't help but soften at the look Lucy had on her face, or really, just Lucy being Lucy. It was Lucy who she could just catch a glimpse of and instantly melt on the spot. Her girlfriend was everything to her, and she would do anything for her...even if it meant buying her a $750 surf board she probably would never use.
She didn't care though, because right now Lucy was with her. And Kate was the one Lucy would cross a whole entire beach for to get to the horrors of the unknown, also known as, the ocean.
Kate stopped in her tracks and turned around to face the other woman. Her eyes meeting the other woman's hazel golden eyes.
"If you're having any second thoughts, it's okay." Kate reassured her worried girlfriend, "I would never want to force you to do anything you wouldn't want to do."
"No, it's okay really." Lucy replied, "I need to do this, I need to face my fears."
And she really meant it.
"Are you one hundred percent sure?" Kate asked, scanning Lucy's face for any hint of hesitation, "We could always do this another day."
"Nope, it's okay." Lucy reassured Kate as she gave her hand a little squeeze. "I got this. Today's the day, I can feel it."
As much as it was to reassure Kate, it was also an attempt to make herself feel better.
"Remember, you may be small but you are very damn mighty."
"You always know the best thing to say, don't ya." Lucy teased, her grin matching the beaming sun that shone above.
Leave it to Kate to say exactly what she needed to hear to make herself feel better.
They continued to walk, hand in hand. The deep blue approaching closer and closer. Lucy suddenly felt a surge of panic, but her perseverance kept her going.
It was a childhood fear Lucy had never overcame. She didn't think she would ever, despite the fact she lived on an isolated island surrounded by the literal ocean. That was until she met Kate, her beautiful surfer.
Like the waves of the ocean, their relationships had their ups and downs and one big tsunami. Yet, they managed to overcome them and are now sailing happily.
When she was with Kate, she felt like she could do anything. It was Kate who gave her the confidence and strength to attempt to overcome her biggest fear.
"Are you ready?" Kate asked, pulling Lucy out of her trance.
"Yes. I am so ready." Lucy replied, biting down away her fear.
Kate wasn't as convinced. She saw right through her.
"I know I said this before, and I will say it again." Kate gently began. "Fear takes a lot of work and time to overcome. You have to be patient with yourself and go at your own pace."
Lucy knew Kate was right. In all honesty, she didn't feel ready at all. And she didn't understand why.
It was a stupid childhood fear and she wasn't a child anymore; she was a full grown adult. How pathetic was she still holding onto her silly childhood fears?
What was she so afraid of?
