Before chaos, I was promised a calm day.

Alice drove through the streets of my home, and as soon as it started getting colder and colder, she handed me a dark jacket while smirking to herself. Probably amused to see Caius and Demetri uncomfortably shifting behind while the silence enveloped us. It was a welcomed distraction every second the gloom covered us, and the speck of slight rain traced the window.

It was in the middle of the night and the highway was dark as ever, there's already a few up and about, going through their lives as we drove by, while I was carrying a significant weight on my shoulders. Somehow, I still feel awful about putting our lives in danger. Caius could've chosen to stay, push me away, or take the easy route and let me rot in Volterra for the rest of my life. But he put his own immortality on the line just to be with me. I wasn't sure if I could be fully happy at the thought while sleeping with one eye open.

I was at the edge of my seat as Alice drove by the grocery store and felt the sudden guilt come up my throat. I hadn't thought about all the things I decided to let go of the minute I upended my whole life and flew across the world. My job, the lodge, the people I love. I felt a hand slip behind my arm, and it was Caius. He held me for a second, and I breathed in the sharp, cold air, trying not to think about things that were already said and done. Regrets climbed my throat like a threatening hurl, but I held it in, hoping my arrival would at least grant my guilt some reprieve.

We reached a secluded part of the highway, somewhere I haven't been before, and as Alice followed the path of a pebbled road getting smaller and surrounded with nature, it led to a mansion in the middle of nowhere. It was wrapped in glass windows and wooden exterior, every single room was visible from the outside, as if the Cullens didn't feel the need to hide.

She parked in front of the steps and when I went out, Alice purposely stood between Caius and me, rounding her arms around my shoulders. I saw his frown deepening at the obvious. "Welcome to our crib, Luce!" Her lively expression was too high for my jet-lagged consciousness, but I smiled gratefully. "Come on. They're waiting." She started pulling me by the arm, seeing the two men follow behind with a huge distance between.

As we came up the stairs, the door opened to Dr. Carlisle and a dark-haired woman with a very welcoming smile. "Lucy Clearwater. It's nice to finally meet you." Their eyes were bright golden brown, it was almost normal-looking and definitely far less ominous.

"Welcome to our home, Lucy. I'm Esme." She held my hand, and the coldness of it seemed familiar already.

"Thank you." I said. "I hope I'm not imposing too much. I just need a place to breathe for a bit before..." My voice trailed, thinking of home that's almost arms length away from where I am.
