Long, long ago, there was a kingdom named Fior. It was an island frozen in midair, drifting among the clouds. It was the place of dreams, where animals of all sizes roamed the land and fireflies danced among the bushes. Flowers bloomed every year with a tinge of magic and a sprinkle of fairy dust. The most magnificent part of this island was the tree that towered above the whole kingdom with its branches sprawling in the air in every which way, providing shade for all who lived on this island. Its leaves drifted of the tree, sparkling in the sunlight as morning dew slid off the glossy leaf. From afar, nothing of this island could be seen. This island was enveloped in a circular wall of fog but just in the perimeter of the kingdom, the sun shone brightly as if the island was the only pace worth of any sunlight.

In this magical kingdom, there lived two clans, the Tengu, crow winged humans, and Yosei, fairies. The Yosei was always labeled as the stronger clan, the clan of more power. They were mainly the ones in charge of order on Fior. There were only a few Tengu who had earned respect out of generations and generations of effort. The Yosei always were the ones living in the best conditions. Therefore, every time a Yosei was born into the world and opened its teeny butterfly fairy wings, a Tengu is assigned to it as its “playmate”. He would care for and live with the Yosei for the rest of its life. There was one rule that this process required. To keep the bloodline of both clans pure, the Uppers, the kings of Fior, set a rule that stated that the two clans could not fall in love. The Uppers did not expect this to be much of a problem for the two clans despised each other. The process of assigning a partner was only for the two clans to live in harmony without creating a war.

Though, as time went by, the process became a tradition instead of a law and the two clans became close. Enemies became friends and friends became secret couples. The Uppers’ plan began to shatter. They were enraged that their plan of pureness had failed and tried to pull the law back but it was already too late. The ‘playmate process’ had already become a custom and it was already grazed into the two clans’ minds over these 1000 years. Now, in the future, the Uppers were forced to turn to what they feared.
