Is it, peace is a virtue or ignorance is bliss?

Melani tiptoed through the living room, her eyes fixed on the stairs leading to her bedroom. She had made it past the first hurdle – getting into the house without waking her parents.

Just as she reached the stairs, a voice pierced the silence.

"Where you come from?" her sister, Meghan, asked, sitting on the couch, her phone in hand.

Melani's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected Meghan to be up.

"From a lit ass prom night," Melani replied with a laugh, trying to play it cool.

Meghan sucked her teeth. "Then it ain't shit, you sneaking in here at five am."

Melani's mind raced. She needed to deflect attention.

"Why are you up?" Melani asked, shifting the focus.

"I'm going to Orlando's crib," Meghan said, mentioning her boyfriend.

"At five am?" Melani raised an eyebrow.

"I miss him," Meghan said with a shrug. "Bye."

Meghan waved goodbye as she grabbed her keys and left. Melani let out a sigh of relief.

She quickly ran to her room, closing the door quietly behind her. Leaning against the door, Melani laughed softly, happy she had snuck in successfully.

As she tossed her bag onto the bed, Melani's thoughts drifted to Sevyn and their complicated history. Why did she always fall back into his arms? She knew she deserved better.

Melani pulled out her phone and texted her friends, Renee and Breonna, in their group chat.

"Mel: I've made it in successfully"

Renee responded immediately.

"Fuck you doing texting the GC at five am"

Breonna chimed in.

"Whatchu doing up?"

Melani smiled.

"I made a trip to CVS"

"Breonna:👀"

"Pull up, 3:00 pm"

Melani exited the chat, feeling a sense of normalcy return. She crawled into bed, sighing tiredly, and closed her eyes. The exhaustion of the night finally caught up with her, and she drifted off to sleep.

As she slept, Melani's thoughts lingered on Sevyn and their conversation earlier. "Us dating in freshman year of high school don't mean shit." His words stung, but she knew she couldn't change him.

Melani's phone buzzed, breaking her sleep. She ignored it, rolling over and burying her face in the pillow.

The memories of prom night and Sevyn's room lingered, a constant reminder of the cycle she couldn't escape.

But for now, Melani just slept.
