Chapter 24
"Has your ex said anything else to you about us," Yoongi asked, away for the weekend and leaning on a wall at the back of a venue that he wasn't familiar with, his manager off in the distance making sure no-one came near if they approached. It was only a few days away but he felt the distance, calling and messaging more than he ever used to do. And his band members noticed, teasing him.
"I haven't spoken to him at all," Kat answered, tucked up on her bed, glad he'd managed to snatch five minutes away to call. He'd only been gone a day and a half and it already felt a long time. The connection she had with him now stretched too thin when he was a long way away and she knew she had to get that under control because he traveled so often and she wouldn't be able to join him when he did. It also played a little with her mind since traveling had been the beginning of the end of her marriage. Not that she dwelled on that much but it did pop into her head from time to time when her insecurities were surfacing.
"I've been monitoring social media and he hasn't said anything to anyone or if he has, no-one has taken it seriously."
"Yeah, well, it is kind of unbelievable so even if he said something, no-one would actually believe him," she said and he smiled, running his hands through his hair and then smoothing it down. It wasn't a video call, too exposed to talk that way where he was today but he found himself naturally trying to look his best, even when she couldn't see him. It was kind of ridiculous and sometimes Yoongi wondered if he was falling a little too quickly for Kat, definitely more than just smitten.
"Only unbelievable that it was purely by chance that we met. Not unbelievable that we'd be together."
She held her breath before letting it slowly out. It still took her by surprise when he admitted they were together but she'd felt it for a long time now, the feelings growing constantly stronger and she knew one day they'd spill out of her. "I miss you," Kat said instead, burrowing down into the bedding.
There was silence broken only by his breathing and she frowned at the stillness, wondering if she had said too much. It was confusing sometimes to know what Yoongi needed to hear or whether she was saying too much but Kat was true to her feelings. If he didn't feel the same way, it would all naturally come to an end and she swallowed the thickness that gathered in her throat at the thought.
"Sorry, sorry, my manager came over and I missed the end of that, what were you saying?"
"Just that I'm glad you'll be home soon," she adapted and his answer was quick.
"Me too, you're free that night, right?"
"Yes, I can come to you? The girls are home then. That's if you want to see me," she quickly added, aware he hadn't actually invited her. They'd reached a kind of unspoken agreement that almost all their free time was spent together, staying over the weekend almost a given but he might just want to unwind after the travel and she said as much. "I know you might be tired and want an early night."
"It is late when we land and we'll have to go through the main airport so ARMY can see we're back and that always takes extra time for security. But of course I do, let yourself into my place," he finished and she smiled at that.
The security staff at his building were now very familiar with her as she was on the approval list, having access to his apartment with a slightly complicated but much used system that meant she could go anytime she wanted. It had been awkward at first, unsure if she was meant to get to know them or just wave out but they greeted her by name and relaxed their shoulders when they saw it was Kat. Still, arriving when he wasn't there to wait for him felt a little like she was intruding on his private domain even though he'd been the one to sort out the access. He had so little privacy that she didn't want him to regret that she had a way to always get to him. "OK, if you want me to."
