Xavier Augusta was never very book-smart; he preferred fists to words, and his affinity for violence got him in trouble more times than he could count. His family of intellectuals and scholars never really understood him, in fact, they were 'greatly put off by his barbaric interests'. his father especially did not approve of his dream of joining the military; he said the only way he would sign the consent form was if Xavier signed a contract stating his father had the right to choose a bride for him. Richard Augusta had put forth the silly condition, hoping his mammoth of a son would be put off by it and not join the army surprisingly Xavier agreed because, by the time this condition was put forth, his family's constant comments and snide remarks had led him to believe no gil would willingly go out with the guy who punches people for fun, none of his friends' parents let him hang around their kids anymore.

Amara Creed only ever had one dream: to make something of herself, raised in a poor immigrant family, she only ever wanted to be something her parents would be proud of. she studied in the best universities with the best scholarships and worked hard to earn her own money during college and get the best grades possible. She was a grade-A student who worked to fulfil her dream and became the youngest professor of history that UCLA ever had.

when Xavier was injured in action and was set to retire, his father paid him a visit in the hospital, purely to let him know that he had found a wife for him, the new gardeners' daughter, a professor, he hoped that she would show his son how much better like is as an academic.

when Richard Augusta proposed a marriage between his elder son and Moreno Creed's daughter,  Moreno was sceptical at first because she was this classist asshole that he had suffered a marriage between his son whom he had previously disowned, proposing to his daughter who had just become a professor.  despite his better judgment, moreno accepted and said that if his daughter agreed then they could marry, some CVs and portfolios were sent to both youngsters and they both looked them over, Xavier, knowing he had no choice, accepted while Amara took a good two weeks to decide.

a prenup and a marriage licence were written up, which both parties signed, but at different times. Amara signed them at the courthouse itself, and Xavier signed them in the hospital.
