The rays of light from the sunrise shone through the windows of the Princess' room in the Niflheim castle, illuminating the people seated inside. The two people sat at the small bronze table, an antique chessboard lay between them, the young man's face was staring at the elegant, black, marble rook, his face slightly scrunched in concentration, his black hair swished slightly as he looked at any possible moves. The young woman across from him smiled as she looked at the obvious distress in his brilliant golden eyes. She chuckled as she looked at him.
"Oh Nick, there is only one way that rook your staring so intently at can only go one way in it's current position, and that is straight forward for three squares." She pointed at the squares away from the chess piece. A black blush crept across his cold, grey skin.
"Oh, yeah? I'm not very good at chess, well this is the first time I've played it with another person though. I'm not completely sure what each does to be completely honest. Thank you for being so patient with me, Princess." He looked sad for a moment before he looked up and smiled awkwardly at the Princess who returned the smile.
"Oh dear, that must of been incredibly lonely. I'll help you and tell you what each piece can do if you need my help." Her long blue, fading to purple plait with multiple flowers weaved into it, swished along the edge of the table as she lent forward to pat his head, her body temperature dropped as she touched his cold skin. His black blush deeper as she sat back down. As his hand moved over to the piece a loud knock on the door interrupted them, the Princess leapt to her feet, her long blue dress hid her feet, making it seem like she was floating across the ground, the flowers in the pleats of the dress bobbed slightly as she moved. The door creaked open, a woman stood in the doorway, her arms folded. Her short black and orange hair didn't hide the horn sticking out of her forehead. Her extravagant orange and black dress with an orange built in corset style increased in length at the back in comparison to the front that revealed her multicoloured, almost patchwork styled stockings. The Princess smiled at her, who only returned it with an expressionless, neutral gaze. The Princess led her into the room, smiling as she did so, however the visitor waited by the doorway, foot tapping.
"So what brings you here, Sunny? Orlando gave me the day off from lessons today."
Nick walked over to the two conversing women, wondering if he was going to be needed in whatever it was that was going on, his grey hooded cloak that barely covered his abdomen reached past his knees at the back, leaving the bright orange lining inside partially visible, slightly contrasted with his dark brown pants, he stood off to the side of the two as he watched on in curiosity while the others spoke to each other.
"You two have been called for an important duty today so you need to follow me quickly, you must hurry, the others would of begun by now!" She hastily walked out of the room, leaving Nick and the Princess looking at each other in bewilderment before they followed her down the extravagant corridor, paintings of the king, Jean, Nick's younger brother adorned the walls. Sunny led the two out of the castle and into a large building by the edge of the town, vine grew up the walls and miss as beginning to show between the cracks of the grey bricks. They walked through the blue and purple doorway into a similarly coloured, large corridor with dozens of doors along the walls, a bright red rug lay across the floor from the doorway past the rooms and onwards, at the end, past the doors was a grey staircase with the same rug leading upwards. Each door had a window but only one had a bronze nameplate that read "Charles (Charlie)" on it, the two looked in and saw a young man surrounded by many pencils and pieces of parchment, he leapt between them all, pushing each pencil slightly each time, they could see there was something written on the parchment but before they could read it Sunny cleared her throat from the top of the staircase, waving at them to hurry them up the stairs. She led them down another corridor and stopped in front of an open door, the only open door they had passed since they had entered the building.
"Well you're here, good luck with it and I'll get you when it's time to finish." Sunny turned and began to walk back down the corridor again before Nick called out to her
"Wait! What are we supposed to do here! I don't understand." Sunny didn't even turn around as she called her vague answer back to them
"Just use the board to contact the living person and they'll reply, there will be a button to push if they ask for someone, just say their name and it'll contact them, good luck" she waved her hand back at them as she walked back down the stairs, Nick and the Princess watched as she disappeared from sight, they walked into the dimly lit room, two tables were set up, a simple chair under both. Sitting on top of the two tables was an extravagant board with the alphabet, numbers between zero and one, yes and no, and a simple greeting and farewell. Next to the board was a small, wooden, triangular object with a circle of glass in the middle. Written on both was the word "Ouija" in cursive. They looked at one another and hesitantly sat on the chairs, facing the boards.
"Nick, I'm not sure what to do now?" The Princess whispered quietly, after a moment Nick looked up at her and sighed before looking back at the board and replying softly
"Neither do I..." As if on cue, the triangular shape slid across onto the greeting on the Princess' board before moving off again, she slowly moved it back onto the greeting before moving it to the blank space above the alphabet. She turned and saw the same thing happening to Nick, they made eye contact before looking back at their respective boards. The triangle moved under her fingertips and slowly spelt out D O E S D A N I E L L I K E M E, the Princess turned to Nick and smiled slightly while she asked him
"Does Daniel like this person? How would we know anyhow?" He looked back at her
"Well, only if Chelsea likes this one then." They looked at each other before they nodded and move the triangle onto Yes. The triangle moved again, spelling out O M G Y A Y
"Ohmge? What's an ohmge? This person just said that too me but I have no idea what it could possibly mean." He just shrugged as his triangle began to move suddenly.
"Who am I? Why do they want to know? I guess I'll reply with no one then." The Princess shrugged as her triangle slowly moved, spelling T H A N K Y O U she smiled
"And thank you random person" she said as she spelt out the first part of the sentence. Once more the triangle moved onto the farewell, which the she replied with before the triangle fell still. She turned to Nick, who was moving his onto goodbye as well, he stared at the triangle and when it didn't move again he looked up at her
"That was certainly peculiar, that was a living person we just contacted then." She nodded back to him before her eyes widened when she realised something
"Oh! I could ask what happened to the kingdom where I lived before, well you know, and if I'm remembered," a malicious smile crossed her face as she continued talking "and maybe I could mess around and frighten them!" Her smile turned into a joyous one as she started laughing at her own thought until Nick interrupted her
"Your triangle just moved, someone contacted you. Are you going to ask about your kingdom or are you going to mess around?" She moved the triangle to the greeting before she replied after a few moments of thinking to herself.
"I'll ask about my kingdom, I'll mess around next time. I believe they call my kingdom the Death Kingdom now..." She looked down sadly before she moved the triangle spelling out W H A T D O Y O U K N O W O F T H E D E A T H K I N G D O M before she hesitantly stared at the triangle as it moved, she read aloud to Nick what it spelt.
"They said "The Death Kingdom? You mean the one where pretty much everyone died? I read from my textbook that the first one to die was the princess of the kingdom." So everyone died then?" Nick gasped and looked up at her, his eyes glittering sadly
"That's awful! I'm so sorry that that happened...." He trailed off as his triangle moved.
"I asked this person about your kingdom too, this is what they replied with "Oh we are studying that at school. Everyone died of an illness, starting with the princess of the land. Apparently she was proposed to but died before she could give an answer. The person who asked her to marry him was the only survivor and apparently never loved another person for the rest of his life and one day he just vanished!" Does that sound right?" A small tear ran unnoticed down her cheek as she nodded and moved her triangle spelling out T H A N K Y O U before moving it to the farewell, moments later it moved to the farewell again. "Philippe..." The Princess muttered before looking at Nick who looked slightly jealous
"He never loved anyone else after I died? That's horrid, I feel so sorry for him, but I love Nick now not him..." She looked at the unmoving triangle again, until Nick spoke
"Even though you know that you still choose me? Maybe we could see if we could scare someone then, that way you and I can get a few chuckles then?" She smiled when he had finished speaking and nodded while wiping away the tear that had made it's was past her jawbone. The triangle moved onto the greeting and instead of moving it onto the greeting she spelt out W H O D A R E S D I S T U R B T H E P R I N C E S S O F T H E L A N D O F T H E D E A D and read out what she said to Nick who chuckled before he read out his, which was surprisingly similar. The triangle moved again and spelt out I A M V E R Y S O R R Y F O R D I S T U R B I N G Y O U P R I N C E S S she read it out "I am not sure what I should do to scare them now... Any ideas Nick?" He shrugged and she moved the triangle spelling S T A T E Y O U R B U S I N E S S M O R T A L once again the triangle spelt S O R R Y F O R D I S T U R B I NG Y O U she looked at Nick "Now what should I do?" He looked at their boards and chuckled again
"Just spin the triangle thing around the letters, that'd scare them" she began to move the triangle around the letters until she let go, the triangle moved to the farewell and she moved it back. She looked at Nick and he moved his triangle to the farewell, they looked at each other and burst out laughing before they said anything.Several hours passed and Nick and the Princess had contacted many people, and scared a small amount of the people who had contacted them. Only once did they need to contact one of the residents of the Niflheim in to contact one of the living people. Sunny knocked on the door and the two leapt out of their seats, still giggling slightly. They winced slightly as the left the dimly lit room and entered the brightly lit corridor, other people of every gender, age and race were leaving the rooms and more people went into them, going in, Sunny explained that every resident of the Niflheim has to do the communication duty, which is called the "Ouija board duty" at least once a year. As they left the building Nick and the Princess held each other's hand. They walked hand in hand into the town. The Princess looked up at Nick who was looking at the crowd
"Nick?" She asked softly, he looked down slightly, looking her in the eyes
"Yes Prin..." He was cut off as she wrapped her arms around him. A black blush spread across his cheeks. The end
