Ben

The summer break was winding down, and Jake and I were back from our road trip adventure. The return to routine was always a bit jarring after the thrill of travel, but we had a whole new semester to look forward to, and with it, a fresh batch of new experiences. Little did we know that one of those experiences would come in the form of Emily, a girl who was about to turn our lives upside down.

It was the first day of our sophomore year, and Jake and I were navigating the chaotic campus scene with our usual blend of enthusiasm and mild confusion. Our morning routine involved a quick stop at the campus café for our usual coffee fix. I was in the middle of a particularly animated rant about the absurdity of my latest poetry when Jake's attention was suddenly diverted.

"Hey, Ben, check it out," Jake said, his eyes fixed on something-or rather, someone-across the room.

I followed his gaze and saw her: Emily. She was standing in line at the coffee counter, her long hair pulled back in a neat ponytail, wearing a bright smile that seemed to light up the whole room. She was talking animatedly to the barista, clearly in high spirits. I could see Jake practically vibrating with excitement next to me.

"Whoa, Jake, calm down. You're going to spill your coffee," I said, trying to suppress my laughter.

"Sorry, sorry," Jake said, his eyes still glued to Emily. "I just haven't seen her around before. She must be new."

"Yeah, she's new," I confirmed, peeking at the girl who was causing all this commotion. "And from the looks of it, she's got everyone's attention."

Jake seemed to be having an internal battle, trying to figure out the best way to approach her. I could practically see the gears turning in his head. Before I could offer any advice-mostly because I was too busy enjoying the show-Jake took a deep breath and made his move.

"Hey, Ben," Jake said, sounding unusually serious. "I'm going to go talk to her."

"Whoa, slow down there," I said, grabbing his arm. "You don't need to rush into anything. Let's just-"

But Jake was already heading toward Emily with a determined stride. I watched as he approached her, a mix of nerves and excitement written all over his face. To his credit, he looked confident, even if his usual calm demeanor seemed to have taken a vacation.

"Hi, I'm Jake," he said, extending his hand. "I don't think we've met before. Are you new here?"

Emily looked up, her eyes meeting Jake's with a friendly curiosity. "Hi! I'm Emily. Yes, I'm new. Just started this semester. Nice to meet you."

Jake's face lit up. "Nice to meet you too! I'm Ben's best friend. He's over there." He gestured toward me, who was trying to look casual while failing miserably.

Emily's gaze shifted to me, and she gave a warm smile. "Nice to meet you, Ben."

I waved awkwardly. "Hey there. Just trying to avoid embarrassing Jake too much."

Emily laughed, and I could see why Jake was so smitten. She had this easy, infectious charm that made it hard not to like her.

"So, Emily," Jake said, clearly in full-on charming mode now. "What are you studying?"

"Psychology," Emily replied, looking genuinely interested. "What about you guys?"

"Jake's studying engineering, and I'm in literature," I said, joining the conversation now that the ice had been broken. "We're basically the perfect combination of brains and creativity."

Emily smiled, and for a moment, I could see why Jake was so drawn to her. She had this way of making everyone feel comfortable, which was impressive given the early hour and the chaos of the café.
