Synopsis
Sanaya Mendoza leads a life of relative comfort on the north side of Kildare Island, nestled in the illusion of luxury. Yet, beneath the surface, tragedy haunts her like a shadow that refuses to fade. First, it claimed her father, then her older brother, leaving her with a quiet ache she has long learned to conceal. Still, she clings to her mother—the last tether to stability when grief threatens to rise from the dark recesses where she's buried it. At least she has her mother.
Her path has been carved for as long as she can remember. She will follow in her father's footsteps and study law at UNC-Chapel Hill, fulfilling the dreams he left behind, picking up where her brother could not. Her role as the patchwork for her family's broken pieces is a burden she carries so deeply that she has forgotten who she once was, but she's determined to keep her life untroubled, carefully steering away from chaos. Unfortunately, trouble has other plans—it doesn't knock; it storms in, dragging her into its wild currents until she's drowning in it.

A treasure hunt, the reckless escapades of her best friend falling for a notorious Pogue, and the alarming descent of said friend's older brother into madness, which culminates in an act of horrifying violence—Sanaya is caught in a whirlwind she never saw coming. And just as everything spins out of control, she discovers that her mother is harbouring a secret from her, one that she fears above all else.
In the midst of all this upheaval, her life has one more cruel twist to offer. Her adventures stir up a long-buried childhood crush—an inconvenient and unbidden longing for the most abhorrent boy on the entire Island, bound by the thread of tragedy that they are, and in this chaos, Sanaya realizes that even the most carefully constructed walls can't hold forever.
