• Sara-Lynn's POV •

It was a gloomy day as I woke up from my slumber. I got up from my bed stretching my arms with a yawn. Another day of patrolling and making sure we have food for everyone. What a drag. I get up from bed and start to get ready for my day. I put on my clothes and brush my hair putting it up into a ponytail leaving some pieces in the front to frame my face. I grab my white sneakers, jacket, and pistol. I put the gun behind my back in my jeans for safekeeping. I've been shooting for as long as I can remember even picking up a pistol. You always need one to kill runners, clickers, stalkers, or even worse people.

It's a cruel world indeed. To kill or be killed. But I've gotten used to it. I opened the doors to see  Uncle Tommy and Maria were already out.

"Did I wake up late or what?" I mumbled to myself.

I grab a small loaf and scarf it down to hold me over for the long day I'll most likely have to endure. I walk out of my home. I looked to see that the gates were open slightly. That's weird we don't ever open them unless going hunting, getting supplies, or medicine. I see four figures walking in. I see Maria and Uncle Tommy, but there's also an older man I have never seen before. There also was a girl. She looked about my age she had brown hair tied in a ponytail, green eyes, a red tee with a dark grey long sleeve underneath, some jeans, and sneakers carrying a backpack.

For some reason, I couldn't keep my eyes off of her. I was instantly drawn to her like a moth to a flame. But you don't want to get too close or you'll burn. The closer you get to others, the more likely you will lose them. I have learned that many times in the past years. That's why I mostly keep to myself.

"False alarm. They're friendly." Maria said to everyone who was on edge with the strangers walking in.

Who are these people?

It seems like Uncle Tommy knows them since he has his arm around the guy chatting. They start walking towards me and I cross my arms. The man looks at me in utter shock. I instantly looked away uncomfortable making eye contact with the girl who was already looking at me. She gave a small smile as I did the same.

"Sara-Lynn! We have some guests. This is Ellie and Joel." Maria said that they were now closer.

Now I was in utter shock. Joel. Joel Miller as in my father. The guy I thought was dead. Who left me and my uncle to fend for ourselves for years.

"Sara-Lynn you have grown so much," Joel utters looking at his daughter.

"You know her too Joel?" Ellie asked.

My hands were shaking. I don't know how to feel right now. Joel walks over to me and I don't say a word.

"Look I want to" Before he could finish his sentence my fist collided with his cheek.

The man stumbles back a bit of blood falling from his mouth.

"SARA-LYNN!!!" Tommy and Maria yelled.

"What the fuck." Ellie said shocked.

"You think coming in and saying Hey Sara-Lynn look at you all grown up is going to fix the 13 years of abandonment you've caused for me? Don't act like you know me when this whole time I thought you were dead." I shouted my hands shaking even worse.

"Look I can explain-" Joel started.

"I don't want to hear your shitty excuse. Uncle Tommy I'm gonna start my patrol now. Don't bother to call for me if it has anything to with that man right here." I said pointing right at Joel walking off. I get on my horse Lucky and ride out off base.
