October, night from 7th to 8th
Evan sobered up instantly when Charlie lost consciousness from lack of oxygen. Despite a timely injection of an antihistamine, the swelling didn't decrease.
"Guys... He's really bad," Evan said worriedly, holding Charlie in his arms, "We can't handle this ourselves, we need to take him to the hospital..."
"Ambulance?" Max suggested.
"By the time that ambulance gets here, he'll be dead a thousand times!" Darren snorted, "We'll take him ourselves!"
"Yeah, right, we'll take him!" Casey yelled, "Use your brain, if you still have any left! You're high, we've all been drinking! Who's going to drive?"
"If we don't decide now, a doctor won't be needed," Nathan stated gloomily.
"For God's sake, Nate!" Evan fearfully pressed Charlie to himself. Even the hypothetical possibility of death right before his eyes terrified him. He couldn't even think about such an ending. If necessary, he would drag him himself, but he wouldn't let this happen. No deaths, not today, not near him.
"Shut up, all of you!" Yena snapped, "I know what to do! I live nearby, I'll call my grandpa. He'll take us!"
"Yeah, that's an option," Evan whispered. He could, of course, call Nova and Raine. But they, like the ambulance, would take too long. The Kennedy family's personal driver would take much time as well. They were already acquainted with Yena's grandfather, Mr. Malvolio Moore. He never refused help to anyone.
While Yena called her grandfather and briefly explained the urgency of the situation, Casey packed Charlie's things into his backpack. Nathan and Max were decided to be left at the cafe to clean up. Malvolio Moore rushed to the scene in a minute, while Evan and Darren carried Charlie outside. Loading the guy into Mr. Moore's car, Evan, Yena, Casey, and Darren went to the hospital.
The situation was complicated by the lack of a hospital in Amber Hill itself. It had burned down in a fire years ago. For many years, residents had relied on medical facilities in neighboring towns - Oferton and Clargan. The issue of a hospital in Amber Hill was a constant battle, postponed and frozen. Only particularly acute cases drew attention to this problem, but soon everything returned to its usual quietude. The hospital in Oferton was more trusted, but Clargan was closer. Mr. Moore didn't hesitate long and turned north, towards Clargan.
As Yena and Casey explained the situation to Mr. Moore, Evan sat by the open window, holding Charlie close to provide him with some fresh air. To distract himself from the terrifying thoughts of things getting worse, Evan took Charlie's phone out of his backpack. The hospital would need the parents' contacts, any information at all, and they had nothing. Hesitating a little, Evan lifted Charlie's hand and used his finger to unlock the phone.
They reached the hospital as quickly as possible. Mr. Moore, his strength undiminished by age, carried Charlie out of the car himself, delivering him to the emergency room. Charlie was placed on a stretcher and taken away for urgent medical care. To Mr. Moore's credit, he didn't ask any extra questions, didn't reproach them for drinking, and vouched for Charlie and the others upon arrival at the hospital.
"Is any of you related to this boy?" one of the nurses asked when she returned to the corridor to clarify all the necessary data.
"No... We're his classmates," Casey said, "We had a party, and then..."
"His name is Charlie Wright, sixteen years old," Evan reported, "The swelling was caused by a peanut allergy."
"And you, sir?" the nurse turned to Mr. Moore.
