It seemed as though fall had come at last. Hogwarts trees came to life, sprinkling red, orange, and yellow leaves all across the grounds. The weather was considerably colder, with more bouts of rain and strong wind than ever. As the end of October neared, students were thinking of one thing: Halloween.

There was a flurry of chatter surrounding the Halloween feast, elaborate costumes, and of course, parties. Teachers and Prefects were all fluttering around, decorating the castle as they saw fit; Hagrid in particular dragging his human-sized pumpkins all the way up from his garden, spacing them out evenly along the hallways. Even the ghosts were in a great mood, becoming visibly cheerier as the fall holiday drew closer. However, no-one in the castle was more excited towards Halloween than Sam Prewett.

Running along the messy paths of Hogwarts, with her hand-knit scarf blowing in the wind, Sam almost bounced with every step she took. Alice, Marlene, and Lily all walked side-by-side finding a place to sit down, wanting to take advantage of the sunny day they've had in weeks.

"What's on your mind Sam?" Lily inquired, adjusting the tie underneath her sweater. "You seem happy."

"It's Halloween," Sam breathed out in a tune. She took a second to round on the girls, stopping them in their tracks. "It's only the best day of the year!"

"Err okay," Marlene laughed at Sam's obsessive tone. "I think Christmas is way better though."

"No, no, no. I didn't mean it like that," Sam talked animatedly. Aside from the costumes, candy, and children's tales of mythical beasts, the young Ravenclaw liked Halloween for a completely different reason.

"It's my birthday! It's on the 31st! Isn't it great?"

"Your birthday is on Halloween?" Alice asked.

"Duhhh," Sam stated as though it was obvious. "And it's at the castle this year, which makes it even better. All the ghosts, the feast, the pranks! It's perfect!"

"Samm, why didn't you tell us your birthday was soon?" Marlene said, distraught. "We could've gotten gifts for you!"

"You'll just have to give me good Christmas gifts this year." Sam stated, a smile plastered on her face.

Sam's parents never really made a huge deal about birthdays, but her brothers were a completely different story. Molly was always at Hogwarts, so the three siblings would always try to sneak out of the house to go play quidditch in the yard.

Sam remembers one year before the twins left they were able to persuade Sam to come with them to celebrate "trick-or-treating", whatever that was, in a neighboring muggle town. All these years, Sam has been waiting to see Hogwarts during Halloween, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. She just hopes that her parents won't forget now that she's out of the house.
