CHAPTER ONE, what happens overnight
" I'm a wanderess, I'm a one night stand, don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man "
•-•★•🔪•☆•-•TWO MONTHS LATER
Music played softly in the background as Kathryn Ellis lay on her bed, blue eyes staring at the ceiling, lost in thought.
It had been two years. Two years since her mother died in that car crash. Two years since her father uprooted her and her brother from San Antonio to this tiny town of Woodsboro, California.
Kathryn was never close to her mother. Actually, she wasn't close to anyone in her family, not even her twin brother. Her parents, John and Erica, were hardly parental. Their children were always an afterthought—work and alcohol took priority.
That didn't mean Kathryn didn't miss her mother. Ever since Erica's death, everything had gone downhill. Her mother, despite being a snobby little bitch, had somehow kept the family together. Now that she was gone, it was all falling apart, and quiet nights like these made Kathryn wonder what might have happened if her father hadn't driven them off the road.
With a deep sigh, Kathryn whipped her head toward the window as a sound from outside caught her attention. She wasn't easily spooked, but tonight was different. Something felt off...
Getting up from the twin-sized bed she had shoved against the wall of her small room, she grabbed one of her brother's oversized shirts from the floor, pulling it on over her underwear. The shirt fell just below her backside.
Her sock-covered feet padded softly toward the window. It was locked, like usual, and just as she went to open it, a figure popped into view, startling a scream out of her.
Billy Loomis, one of her friends from Woodsboro High, tapped on the window, a smug smirk on his face. "Can I come in?" Billy questioned as she pushed open the window.
"Uh, no, you cannot," Kathryn scoffed, glancing nervously at her bedroom door. "You can go—that's what you can do."
Billy, of course, paid no mind to her words. He was already crawling in through the window, eyes wandering around her room.
"What the hell, Billy?" she gaped, watching him walk around like he owned the place. "I don't recall telling you to come in, dipshit."
Billy turned back to her, unfazed and unbothered by her words. "It just occurred to me that I've never been in your room before." He states, ignoring what she'd previously said as he gestured his finger around her room.
"Yeah, because you have a girlfriend, weirdo," Kathryn snapped, rushing in front of him before he could get any closer to her dresser. "You need to leave before my dad finds out you're here. He'll kill you and me."
But Billy wasn't getting the hint, and before he could utter a single word, the door flew open.
"Why's the music so loud—oh."
Standing in the doorway was Nathan, her twin brother, a bowl of grapes in hand. His gaze shifted between Kathryn and Billy. "Why is there a boy in your room?"
Heart racing, Kathryn marched over to Nathan, pushing him out of the room and slamming the door in his face. Leaning her forehead against the wood, she closed her eyes for a second before realization crossed her mind. She swung the door back open.
He was still there, a blank expression on his face. Definitely high.
"Hey—dingus. Not a word to John, got it?"
