The judge in the court room was about to declare Melanie Bevis as Melanie Ronson. She was only 8, confused, and scared of how her new family would treat her. All she remembers is a Social Worker taking her away, in a bland, tan Subaru, with her things all stuffed in a black trash bag.

That's how Melanie felt right now as she stood, waiting to be named Melanie Ronson. She felt like a trash bag, something being thrown away, only to be recycled many times before she was taken home and put back where she belonged. She drowned out the judges voice, as he gave her away to her new family. She wanted Saraya back, she wanted her Mom and Dad back. She wanted to know why she was taken away. Was she too much?? She hoped to God that she wasn't to much for her parents to handle. Sure, she was feisty at times, but she didn't know that was too much. She could've simmered down, but it was too late for that now. Now she was being sent away, to live with the Ronsons. As she was being pulled away by her new family, she looked through the crowd in the court room. She wanted her sister, she wanted her Dad, but she wanted her Mom the most of all. She wanted to feel safe in those arms, she wanted to bury her face in that neck. She wondered if her new Mom would let her do that. "Sweetie, I'm Katy Ronson, your Mom." She smiled slightly. "This is your Dad Rick." She got excited. She remembered her dad, his name was Rick too, but everyone called him Ricky. Her "Mom" kept talking. "These are your older siblings. Daniel and April. They are 10 and 13." She smiled at them too. Maybe they'd be as nice as Saraya had been to her. Saraya was the best sister she'd ever had, she always made sure she was fed, clothed, and protected. She's only 10, but she made sure everything was taken care of for little Melanie. She wondered where Saraya was now. Where was her only sister when she needed her most??

She felt herself being pushed into the back seat of the Ronson's car. Her trash bag of belongings was already here, sitting next to her. They made it home quickly and April nicely introduced Melanie to her room. "Mom will probably take you shopping tomorrow, to get stuff to decorate this room with." Melanie was excited for that. She hoped it would happen, it felt to her like a promise. April left her room and she set her bag on the bed. The first thing she took out was her teddy bear. Saraya bought that with her own 10 dollars that she saved up, her sister told her the whole story of wanting to get her a teddy bear. Melanie hugged the teddy bear close and cried silently into its plush fur. "I'll get you back Raya....I will."
That was the prologue to my new story "Can't You Believe".
