Hope's pov
I had studied Esther's grimoire cover to cover, but I couldn't find a way to break the curse.
«There has to be something I missed!»
«Hope, sweetheart.» Aunt Rebekah gently took the grimoire from my hands.
«There's nothing we can do for him.»
«There has to be a way! I'm not giving up on him!» I cried, my voice breaking as I snatched the book back from her.
«You've gone through this grimoire at least a hundred times. Whatever you're looking for, it's not in there.»
As much as I hated to admit it, she was right.
I slowly closed the grimoire and placed it down on the bed.
The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Landon was going to die.
It was over.
I couldn't save him.«I can't lose him too, Auntie Beks.»
I collapsed onto the bed, burying my face in my hands.
«I'm just so tired. I can't...» I took a deep breath.
«I can't live like this anymore...»She sat next to me, pulling me into her embrace, resting my head on her shoulder as she held me tightly.
«Why would Esther do something like this?»
«She's trying to break you. First, with the dream about your father, and now this.» Aunt Rebekah replied, her voice was calm but filled with anger and frustration.
«And I'm the monster in her eyes?» I muttered bitterly, blinking back tears.
She pulled back slightly, just enough to look down at me, her gaze filled with sadness.
«If I were gone...» I whispered, almost to myself.
«The people I love would finally be safe.»Rebekah's eyes widened as she looked at me, shocked.
«Don't you ever say that, Hope!» Rebekah said with a sharp tone.
«We've been protecting you long before you even came into this world. Everything we've done, all the sacrifices, they were made because we love you more than anything.»
All I could hear was the echo of loss, of every person I'd watched suffer because of me.
«That's the problem!» I shouted.
«My parents are dead because of me! And so is Uncle Elijah!»«You saved your dad. Don't you get it?»
How could I have saved him when I was the reason he was gone?
«You need to hear this, even if it hurts. Before you, Nik was... he was the devil.»
«And I don't mean that figuratively. He was truly ruthless. He killed and tortured people without a second thought, and not just his enemies. He did it for sport, for fun. There was a time when I wasn't sure there was anything human left in him.»
