Chapter 7

It is early morning and a few birds have woken up, but in the cave in Åby both the dragon queen and the male are awake. The eggs laid by the dragon queen the previous day have begun to hatch. So far, the 20 eggs in the first nest have only vibrated a little, but both the male and the dragon queen stand in front of the nest and wait for the baby dragons to get out of all the eggs.

Cracks begin to form on the eggs and the clear liquid begins to flow out of the cracks. The sound when all the eggs crack at the same time becomes a cacophony of crackles. As the cracks grow larger, more of the clear liquid flows out.

One of the eggs moves very violently and there are really big cracks in the shell. The baby dragon has kicked open the shell with its right hind leg and it is hanging outside the shell. The hind leg moves quickly and accidentally kicks an egg that hasn't started hatching yet. But there is no hole in that egg, it just rolls a bit away. The kicking baby dragon continues to crack its shell. After just a short while, the shell comes off completely and it tumbles out into the nest.

Several eggs move wildly. It is clear that the young dragons that are in the eggs quickly want out. Five eggs jump around in the nest and there is a giant crack at the top of the five eggs that jump. The transparent liquid squirts out at the same rate as the five eggs jump. In the end, the shells have come off all five eggs and the lively baby dragons are tumbling out of the nest.

Three other eggs move more sideways, rocking violently back and forth. Finally the shells of the three eggs come off and the baby dragons tumble out and run into each other a few times.

Two eggs begin to hatch and a baby dragon in one of them makes funny noises. It almost sounds like an angry cat hissing. The first baby dragon that comes out is the one that makes the noises and is really biting. It angrily bites one of the newly hatched baby dragons that has come out of its shell and hisses angrily. The other baby dragon that comes out of its egg is calmer and just stares at the angry baby dragon

When all the eggs are hatched, all the baby dragons move up from the nest. They are still unsteady on their feet and sometimes tumble but they get up every time and continue to crawl upwards. Some step on each other's heads in their eagerness to get up

The eggs in the second nest begin to hatch and cracks form in the white shell. Some of the cracks are small while others are larger. The clear liquid flows out in batches. Sometimes it bubbles out in batches when the baby dragons move in the eggs..

The cracks soon get bigger and you can see the wet baby dragons moving inside the eggs. They press against the sides and soon the shell there is open enough that they can get out without problems. A baby dragon has raised its wings inside the egg and it looks a little funny as they protrude from the sides of the shell. From some eggs, you can see hind legs and front legs sticking out. Some baby dragons emerge from their eggs backwards.

When all the eggs are hatched, the nest is full of little baby dragons that start to rise up against the dragon queen. Some of the baby dragons are lively while others are more calm and take their time to emerge from the nest. When they are up, they stand and look curiously at their big mom and dad. None of the baby dragons seem to be scared away

The eggs in the third nest begin to hatch. It crackles while cracks form in the eggs. Also from these eggs a transparent liquid comes out. The liquid flows into the nest but dries quickly due to the heat from the stones. The white shells are hard but the dragons are strong and willing to come out.

They press both upwards and downwards and some kick the shell with their back feet so that it comes off more and more. Some baby dragons snort from the effort while others are completely silent. Some of the baby dragons squeak pitifully. A few dragon cubs look around confusedly at their new surroundings.
