Lauren's pen scanned her notebook at full speed, in the vain hope of keeping up with her teacher's unforgiving rhythm.

Three days had passed since the start of the school year. The Walker had crossed paths with Alexandre a few times, but had only spoken to him for a few minutes. While friendships between members of different species were tolerated between people of the same gender, friendships between girls and boys were particularly monitored – a medieval mentality that Lauren found particularly stupid. It was for this reason that she had stayed away from her boyfriend; thus, they did not attract suspicion.

But she had noticed that he was behaving strangely. Since childhood, they had used a combination of simple gestures to talk to each other discreetly, but when she had said "I love you" in this way, he had not seemed to understand. But there was probably an explanation! Maybe he was tired, hence the lost look? Or maybe someone was watching him and Alexandre had been pretending not to reveal the true nature of their relationship?

The bell rings, signaling the end of the "Theory of Mind" class. In a few hours, Lauren had learned a lot, including the fundamental differences between the use of the Spirit element by the Walkers and the Electromancers. Quickly, she put her things away and checked her schedule to see what she had next.

"Nap"... but it was at the other end of the establishment! She left the room in a fury. She had to hurry! Who was the idiot who, in designing her schedule, had thought that she would have time to cross all of Cigam in five short minutes? If she was a Vampire, why not, but she was a Walker...

If she were a Vampire... She would have had the right to see Alexandre in plain sight. And she wouldn't have had any periods, too – that was a significant advantage.

Since she was out of breath from her run, Lauren couldn't sigh, but she would have if she had the chance.

The girl was not a Vampire, and there was nothing she could do to change that fact. So she forced herself to stop fantasizing about what her life could have been.
