Chapter 9 | "It's not love if it's all about lust."
Tuesday, 4/30/85
4:00pmLuna stood in front of her bedroom mirror, her breath catching at the reflection. The emerald gown she had picked out was the perfect choice—a vintage-inspired silhouette with a sweetheart neckline and puffy sleeves, straight out of the pages of Seventeen magazine. The fabric shimmered under the soft glow of her vanity lights, the silver sequins along the bodice catching every movement. She twirled slightly, watching as the layers of tulle swirled around her legs, feeling like she had stepped into one of her favorite music videos causing her to giggle.
Her long, dark curls were styled in soft waves, teased at the crown just enough to give her that voluminous, glamorous look she had spent hours perfecting with her curling iron. A few strands fell loosely around her face, brushing her cheeks with every movement. She had used a light touch of frosted pink eyeshadow to make her brown eyes pop, and a glossy lipstick that matched perfectly.
Madonna's "Crazy for You" played softly on the radio in the background, filling the room with the same anticipation she felt buzzing inside her. This, this was her night. Prom night. She could feel the excitement bubbling in her chest, the rush of knowing she was on the edge of something unforgettable.
Her gaze fell on the delicate gold locket she wore, a gift from her mother, resting just below her collarbone. Tonight was going to be perfect. What kept her so impatient was the thought of Richard; him being her prom date. She couldn't believe it to this day that he had said yes, considering his age.
She traced her fingers over the gold locket resting against her collarbone, a small smile playing on her lips. The sound of footsteps caught her attention, and she turned to see her mother standing in the doorway, her eyes widening with joy.
"Oh, Luna," her mother breathed, her voice thick with emotion. "You look like a princess, so beautiful."
Luna blushed, brushing a hand over her gown self consciously. "It's not too much, right?"
Her mother stepped forward, reaching out to adjust a curl near Luna's face. "No, no, it's perfect. You're perfect. I can't believe my little girl is all grown up." She sighed, shaking her head. "Where did time go.."
"Thanks, mom." She glanced over at her older brother, Nicholas, and then at Daniel, who was leaning casually against the doorframe, already dressed in his tux. He gave her a playful smirk.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure no one steps on your fancy dress," Danny teased, adjusting his bow tie.
Luna rolled her eyes, though a grin tugged at her lips. "Just don't embarrass me, okay?"
The car ride to the school was filled with nervous energy. Danny, as usual, cracked jokes to lighten the mood, but Luna's thoughts were elsewhere, on Richard. He had promised to meet her there, and while part of her wondered why he hadn't offered to pick her up, she dismissed the thought. Richard wasn't like the other guys, but that's what she liked about him. He had his own way of doing things.
When they arrived at the school, her mother pulled the car to a stop in front of the entrance. She turned in her seat to look at Luna with soft eyes. "Have a wonderful time, mis amores. You deserve it."
"Thanks, love you." Luna said, leaning in to kiss her mother's cheek.
Danny stepped out first, then turned to help Luna out of the car, extending a hand out for her to grab. She laughed, taking his hand as she climbed out of the car, her gown sweeping behind her. "Surprised to see you all gentlemen like."
