Chapter 37. Expectations

Cain's P.O.V

I did my best to be home for dinner every day. That was the least I could do. It was hard for me to fulfill my promises to the boys. Alex never complained, but I knew how hard it was for him to hold back. He was exhausted every night. The school where I had enrolled the boys had activities every month. Alex had to fulfill my duties at school and home. My in-laws were fortunately always ready to help. I was on my way to an event when my father contacted me. He wanted to see me in the afternoon. I had no interest in whatever my father had to say.

I didn't want to waste my time, so I refused to meet him. I was surprised when Maverick called me next. He urged me to visit his mansion. I decided to attend the gathering before I got bombarded with calls from Amal. My brother-in-law was one persistent bastard. I went back to my office to wrap things up after the event. My assistant was surprised when I said I would be leaving early. It had been a long time since I had visited Maverick's house. His children were out with their grandparents. My brother-in-law had just gotten home. He was preparing food in the kitchen. I greeted the guy and asked, "What is this all about, Amal?"

Amal smiled and replied, "Father wrote a will. He wants to hear our opinion about it." I groaned and uttered, "I already told him I don't want anything. What is his problem?" Amal glared at me and stated, "He still loves you, Cain. Father's health is deteriorating. He wants to get his things in order while he can." I had heard enough. I could sense Maverick in his office. I decided to see him. Maverick was in deep thought when I opened the door. A malicious aura was oozing out of him. I knocked on Maverick's desk and said, "Calm down, Maverick. There are many omegas here. You don't want them to lose their shit, now do you?"

Maverick composed himself and uttered, "I'm glad to see you, Cain. How's life?" I shook my head and asked, "Mind telling me what is bothering you?" Maverick chuckled and replied, "It's nothing. Don't worry about it." I sighed while gazing out of the window. I had heard about the troubles that were brewing in the supernatural world. I didn't want to overstep my boundaries, so I stayed quiet. My father summoned us after a while. He handed us a file and said, "Read it and give me your opinion. It's not final yet." I chuckled when I read that my father was giving me all his businesses. My father frowned and asked, "What's so funny, Cain?" I handed the document to Maverick and replied, "I don't want your businesses, father. Those companies have been suffering losses for a while now. How do you expect me to salvage them?"

Maverick growled and uttered, "Father taught you how to run the family business since you were a kid, Cain. Why are you acting like all this is a surprise to you? Have you forgotten you were the one who abandoned your duties?" I stood up and buttoned up my suit jacket. I frowned when my father said, "I have already given up my position. The board of directors is waiting for answers." I huffed and said, "Dear father, you love to destroy my life, don't you? Did you forget that I'm the President of this country?" My father winced and answered, "You can handle your position and the companies, Cain. You have enough support to do so."

I chuckled and uttered, "No thanks to you, Father. Give the companies to Maverick's kids. I'm sure they will make something out of them. I have my establishments to worry about." It was almost time for dinner. I didn't want to disappoint the kids, so I left. Amal insisted on staying, but I declined. Alex was helping the boys with their homework when I got home. I kissed my mate's temple and uttered, "Go relax. I'll take over." Alex kissed me softly and walked to the sofa to nap. Ethan had difficulty solving a problem. It took the boys time to finish their assignments. There was a delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. I ruffled Adriel's hair and asked, "What's for dinner, baby boy?" Adriel grinned and replied, "Grandma is making tacos. I can't wait to taste them." Ethan giggled and added, "My mouth is watering already, Daddy."

I helped the kids wash up before dinner. Alex was still asleep. My father-in-law asked me to wake him up. I kissed Alex's cheek and uttered, "Wake up, babe. It's time for dinner." Alex hummed and said, "I had a busy day today. I have no energy to move." I kissed Alex's forehead and asked, "Do you want me to carry you?" Alex patted my cheek and replied, "You wish." I was about to kiss Alex when Adriel yelled, "We are hungry, Papa, Daddy!" Alex laughed while walking into the bathroom. The dinner table was full of tacos, soup, and wings. I took a seat and asked, "What's the occasion?" My father-in-law gazed at his wife and replied, "It's our wedding anniversary today."

Alex gasped and uttered, "Dear lord, how could I forget about it." Alex's mother laughed and stated, "It's alright, son. You have been busy, and we have everything we need right here anyway." I raised my glass and uttered, "Here is to you guys. We promise to make it up to you." My mother-in-law smiled and said, "Thank you, Cain." The boys ate till they couldn't anymore. They fell asleep as soon as we tucked them in. I had to make some important calls. I went to Alex's study to contact my assistant. Alex was sitting on the edge of the bed when I returned. He smelled heavenly.

I hugged Alex and asked, "Is everything alright, my mate?" Alex rubbed his face on my chest and replied, "We captured a rogue today. The guy said that he came to Washington because of a rumor. Someone is gathering people to attack the alpha king. We are still looking into the matter. I will notify you when I get more details." Maverick's exasperated image flashed into my mind. I gazed into Alex's eyes and asked, "Are they planning to attack the pack too?" Alex nodded and replied, "Yes, but don't worry. My men are monitoring the situation." I grabbed Alex's hand and said, "My father summoned me this afternoon. Maverick wasn't in a good moon when I was there. Was he with you guys this morning?"

Alex nodded and replied, "Maverick has been working with us for a while now. We need him to catch the head elder." I sighed while thinking about Maverick. When would the guy start sharing his troubles with me? I thought. Alex shook me and said, "Hey, I will protect him no matter what." I kissed Alex passionately and uttered, "I know. I'm counting on you to do so." Alex fell asleep after our conversation. I masked myself and went to our pack. Maverick's beta was on patrol with his men. I created a barrier around the pack and Maverick's mansion before leaving.

Alex was staring at me when I woke up in the morning. He kissed my cheek and uttered, "I admire your efforts to protect your family." Alex groaned when I said, "How could I forget I can't hide anything from you." Alex and I showered together and got the kids ready for school. My father-in-law was watching the news when we came downstairs for breakfast. I groaned when the reporter said, "The Barrett empire's doom is in sight. The board of directors is planning a takeover. What will the President do about his family's financial situation?" I sighed and thought, "My life is in no way full of sunshine and rainbows."
