I glanced at the clock—9:07 p.m. The office was quiet, the kind of silence that made you question whether anyone was left. Almost everyone had gone home, except for me. And her.
Amara’s office light was still on, a faint glow peeking under the door. I should have left hours ago, but the way she’d looked at me today, the way her gaze had lingered, it did something to me. It was a dangerous game we were playing, one we hadn’t even spoken about but could feel in every glance, every accidental touch.
I tapped my pen against the desk, trying to focus on the report, but my mind was elsewhere—on her. The boss who shouldn’t be occupying this much space in my head. Yet, here I was, still in my chair, waiting for some excuse to see her one more time tonight.
Suddenly, her door opened. My heart jumped. She stepped out, looking as composed as ever—dark red lipstick still perfect, her tailored black dress clinging in all the right places. She didn’t say a word as she crossed the room, but her eyes found mine, and I felt like I was under some kindof spell.
"Late night?" Her voice was casual, but the look in her eyes said something else. Something far from professional.
I cleared my throat. "Just finishing up some reports."
She didn’t respond immediately, but walked over to my desk, standing so close I could smell the faint vanilla of her perfume. Her fingers trailed along the edge of my desk, deliberate, slow, until they stopped at the corner near my hand.
"Funny," she said, her tone lower, almost a whisper, "I thought you'd left by now."
"I—uh, I had a few things to wrap up."
Her eyes darkened. "You don't have to lie to me, you know."
I swallowed hard, the tension so thick it was choking. She leaned in, just close enough for her breath to brush my cheek, and every nerve in my body lit up like fireworks. This was wrong. So wrong.
And I didn’t care.
Her fingers brushed my wrist, soft but electric, and for a second, it felt like the whole world had stopped spinning. We were teetering on the edge, one step from crossing a line that could never be uncrossed.
"Tell me," she murmured, lips so close I could almost feel them, "what are you really staying late for?"
Her hand slid down to my thigh, resting there with just enough pressure to send my pulse racing. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. What could I even say? That I’d been waiting for this? Hoping for it, even though I knew it was a mistake?
Before I could answer, she straightened up, eyes glinting with something unreadable. The moment hung in the air like a breath that hadn’t been released.
"Finish up your work," she said, her voice suddenly all business again, but there was a glimmer in her eyes as she walked away. "You never know when I’ll need you after hours."
And just like that, she disappeared into her office, leaving me sitting there, heart pounding, skin tingling where she’d touched me.
I exhaled, trying to collect myself. But one thing was clear: this wasn’t over. Not even close.
There was something about the way she said it—like a promise. Or maybe a warning.
Either way, I knew one thing for sure: the next time she needed me, I wouldn’t be able to say no.
