"Stop making everything a joke," I say, pointing at him.
His expression sobers, and he shakes his head. "What do you want me to tell Heer? I'm not accepting your reasons for staying away from me," he says firmly, his voice resolute.
I sigh, my shoulders slumping, as I stare down at my hands.
"Come here," he says, tilting his head. Without thinking, my feet move toward him.
He cups my face gently in his hands, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "I love you. Do you hear me? I love you." My heart pounds in my chest. "I'll fight through everything. Your doubts, your insecurities. I'll make them vanish." He presses a kiss to my forehead, his touch grounding yet overwhelming. "Trust me. Just be with me. You don't need to do anything else. "Then that means I was the one who said it first," I say, lifting my chin in mock triumph. "Which obviously means I love you more." I seize the opportunity to steer the conversation away from the topic of staying with him forever.
He shakes his head, his smile soft and secretive. "You have no idea how wrong you are," he says, like he's holding onto a truth only he knows.
My phone rings and I break our stare off and pick it up.
"Hello?"
"Nitu! Where the hell are you? I’ve been trying to reach you since yesterday, and this morning I went to your house only to find it locked. Are you alright? Do you need help? I’m scared. Just tell me where you are!" she shouts, her panic clear.
"I’m fine," I say, glancing at Aman, who watches me pensively. "I... I’m with Aman," I admit softly.
There’s silence on the other end for a moment before she squeals, "Really?!"
