Prologue

I can't remember where I am. I can't see straight. All I can see is a dark blur that's in front of me. I think this is a nightmare, but for some reason, I can't wake up. I try to, but it doesn't work. When I'm finally able to focus my eyes, all I see is dark red. In front of me I see a lifeless body laying on the ground, staining the carpet with a dark crimson red, blood. I suddenly feel my eyes starting to tear up. That blur is — was my mom. On the floor, her hollow, cold eye met mine. I tried to wake her, maybe she was in a dream too, so I shake her, but even shaking her with all my strength didn't wake her.

I heard someone approaching from behind me. He's back, I thought. When the person behind me laid a hand on my shoulder, I flinched. I turned slowly to see his eyes, terrified. What will he punish me for this time? But what I saw wasn't what I expected. I relaxed. It's my sister, she'll know what to do, she will wake up mom. All my hopes turned into ash when I saw her eyes darkening by seeing our mom laying on the floor. She fell on her knees beside me, watching our mother. She looked like a statue, when out of nowhere she embraced me in her arms and slowly passed her hand through my long hair. She murmured something in my ear, but I can't make sense of it.

"Raven, did you hear me? We need to go." She said in a breaking voice. But I didn't respond. I couldn't think. All I did was stay there and watch my mother. Until Elizabeth shook me back to reality.

"Raven, get it together, okay? We need to go. Before he comes back." I saw the fear in her eyes and understood that.... My mother was dead. He killed her, and one day I'm gonna kill him.

"Where are we going to go?" I asked her, very confused, where can we go? There's nowhere he won't find us. We are stuck in this dark tunnel that appears to have no end.

"Let me worry about that, okay? Just go get Claudia and pack your stuff. I'll see you upstairs in a minute. I need to handle this. And for no circumstances let Claudia come down here, she can't see her." She said, looking towards the lifeless body that had once been my dear mom. I shivered at the thought of her being dead and went upstairs for Claudia.

She was playing with her toys in her room. What am I going to tell her? Not even I know where we're going and I'm supposed to be her older sister. I entered her room, not knowing what to tell her.

"Hey, Claudia, I have a question for you," I tried to use the most friendly voice I could and failed miserably.

"What?" she said in her small voice. She's only four years old.

"What if we go on a little adventure, uh? But I must warn you, this is only for the bravest girls." or the dump ones.

"I'm brave," she said, standing up on her tiptoes, trying to make herself seem tall.

"And I love adventures. Where are we going?" Oh no.

"It's a surprise. Now let's pack quickly before we lose more time." I said, while grabbing her backpack from her closet.

We finished putting some of her clothes in the pack. Just when I was about to leave to go to my room and pack my stuff, I saw her picking up all her toys.

"Claudia, you can't take all of them."

"Why not?" she asked

"Because this mission requires only one toy, and it has to be the bravest of all."

She looked sadly at the thought of having to leave some of her toys behind, but eventually selected her favorite one, a small teddy bear, and put it in the pack.

When I entered my room, the first thing I saw laying on the floor was my black backpack for school. I emptied it and started opening drawers of clothes. I put all the necessary things needed first: jackets, shirts, underwear, pants, some first aid things. But then I packed my headphones, my sketchbook, and my favorite book. Also, a picture of my mother, my sisters and I at the Annual Christmas Carnival. I was looking at the picture when I heard Elizabeth coming. She already had her things packed and was lying on my door frame. I immediately put the picture in my jeans pocket.
