The following days were a whirlwind of activity. The CID team pursued every possible lead, but the killer remained elusive. Each step forward felt like two steps back, and Vineet’s stress grew as Chitrole’s favor loomed in the background.
Late one evening, Vineet was alone in the office, poring over the latest evidence. His mind kept circling back to the recent murder. Something about the public execution didn’t fit with the killer’s previous M.O., and yet, Vineet couldn’t shake the feeling that it was tied to the previous victims. But why?
As he sifted through the evidence, his phone buzzed again. It was DCP Chitrole.
Taking a deep breath, Vineet answered, his voice steady despite the turmoil in his chest. “Yes, sir?”
“It’s time, Vineet,” Chitrole said, his voice sharp and commanding. “You need to sabotage the investigation. Delay their findings, misplace evidence—do whatever you have to do, but slow them down. I have my own reasons, and you owe me.”
Vineet’s stomach churned. He had known this moment was coming, but hearing it out loud made it feel real in a way he wasn’t prepared for. Sabotaging the case meant betraying Abhijeet Sir and the entire CID team. It meant betraying the trust he had fought so hard to earn.
“I can’t do that, sir,” Vineet replied, his voice firm. “I’ve worked too hard to gain their trust. I won’t destroy it.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and when Chitrole spoke again, his voice was ice-cold. “You don’t have a choice, Vineet. You owe me for putting you in CID. Don’t forget where your loyalty lies.”
Vineet clenched his fist, anger boiling inside him. He had thought he could handle this, thought he could navigate the complexities of CID and Chitrole’s manipulations. But now, he realized just how deep he was in.
“I’ll figure something out Sir,” Vineet said, his voice strained. “But I won’t sabotage the case.”
Chitrole’s voice hardened. “You don’t have time to figure things out, Vineet. Do it now, or I’ll make sure you lose everything. And I mean everything.”
The line went dead, leaving Vineet standing in the darkened office, his heart pounding in his chest. The threat was real, and now he had to make an impossible choice—one that could cost him his career, his relationship with Abhijeet, and his place in CID.
