The sun was setting behind the Hokage Monument, casting long shadows over the quiet streets of Konoha. Sakura Haruno stood by the window of her small, temporary apartment, staring blankly at the orange sky. Her heart was heavy with betrayal, anger, and a sense of loss she could no longer suppress.
She had spent years waiting for Sasuke. First through his absence, and then through his emotional distance when he returned to the village. But nothing had prepared her for this.
"Naruto..."
The name hung in her thoughts like a curse, not because of hatred, but because of disbelief. Sasuke's betrayal hadn't come from a random fling or a distant mission, but from the person she thought they both trusted the most. The person who had stood by their side through it all.
It was Naruto.
Sakura felt a fresh wave of nausea as the memory flashed in her mind—Sasuke's cold admission, his apathetic gaze as he revealed the truth. It wasn't even with regret. It was as if it had been inevitable, like he was more resigned than remorseful.
She clenched her fists by her side. The Sakura of the past might have endured it. She might have stayed, for Sarada's sake, for the family she had fought so hard to build. But not anymore.
Sarada was everything to her, and the last thing she wanted was for her daughter to grow up in a home where love was so brittle, so conditional.
A soft knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.
"Mama?" Sarada's small voice called from the hallway.
Sakura wiped at her eyes quickly and forced a smile as she opened the door. Her daughter stood there, clutching her favorite book, eyes wide with worry.
"Are we really leaving, Mama?" Sarada asked, her voice trembling just enough to make Sakura's heart break all over again.
Sakura knelt to Sarada's level, brushing her daughter's hair back gently. "Yes, sweetheart. We need some space. It's going to be just the two of us for a little while."
Sarada's brow furrowed. "What about Papa? Won't he miss us?"
Sakura's smile faltered. "He... he has other things on his mind right now."
There was no way to explain to Sarada what had really happened. At least, not yet. She was only eight, and her world still revolved around her parents being her heroes. The time for painful truths would come, but not today.
Sakura stood up and took Sarada's hand. "Let's get our things together, okay? We'll stay at the inn tonight."
They walked through the streets of Konoha as the village transitioned into the quiet of evening. Sakura felt a pang of anxiety as she passed familiar faces, people who would surely start talking once they realized what had happened. She tried to keep her head up, but the weight of her decision was suffocating.
Sarada remained unusually quiet, sensing her mother's turmoil. Sakura squeezed her hand, giving her what little comfort she could.
They arrived at the inn and checked in quietly. Once settled in the small room, Sakura helped Sarada change into her pajamas and tucked her into bed.
"Mama... do you think Papa will come back?" Sarada asked, staring up at the ceiling.
Sakura sat on the edge of the bed, brushing her fingers through Sarada's hair. "I don't know, sweetie. But no matter what happens, I'll always be here for you. I promise."
"Okay," Sarada whispered, and soon her breathing slowed as sleep took her.
Sakura stayed by her daughter's side for a long time, staring at her innocent face. How could things have gone so wrong?
Hours later, Sakura found herself walking the deserted streets alone. She needed air, space to think. Her mind was a chaotic storm of emotions—grief, anger, betrayal, but most of all, confusion. How had she missed it? The distance, the coldness, the way Sasuke's visits had become more sporadic... How long had he been hiding this? How long had she been clinging to a love that was never going to be enough?
Her feet carried her almost unconsciously to a secluded training ground. The very same one where she had once trained alongside her teammates—Naruto and Sasuke.
"Sakura."
The familiar, quiet voice made her freeze in her tracks. She turned, heart racing, as her gaze landed on none other than Itachi Uchiha, standing under the shadow of a tree. His presence was as calm and composed as ever, his expression unreadable, but his eyes—those eyes—held something deeper.
"Itachi...?" Sakura whispered, almost in disbelief.
He had returned to the village only a year ago, having survived his supposed death and now living under Konoha's protection. Though he had stayed mostly in the background, Sakura had always felt his presence—distant, yet observant.
"You shouldn't be out this late," Itachi said, his voice low but not unkind.
Sakura swallowed hard, trying to maintain composure. "I needed air. I couldn't stay in there... not tonight."
Itachi's gaze flickered toward her with something like understanding. He didn't need to ask. He had always been perceptive, even from the shadows.
"Sasuke... he... he cheated on me," she admitted, the words tasting bitter as she said them aloud. "With Naruto."
There was a silence, but not one filled with shock. It was as though Itachi had expected it, or at least wasn't surprised by the revelation. His eyes softened—just for a moment.
"I see," he said simply, but there was a heaviness in his tone that told Sakura he understood more than she could know.
She shook her head, angry at herself for spilling her emotions so freely. "I don't know why I'm telling you this. I'm sorry. I just—"
"You have no reason to apologize," Itachi interrupted gently, stepping closer. His presence, despite the quiet authority he carried, was oddly soothing.
Sakura met his gaze, feeling a sudden warmth she hadn't expected. "I'm just... lost. I don't know what to do anymore."
Itachi's hand hovered near her shoulder for a moment, hesitating before resting there lightly. "You are stronger than you know, Sakura. You always have been."
And for the first time in what felt like days, Sakura believed it. Standing in the quiet of the night, under the gaze of the one person who had seen through so many illusions, she felt the smallest flicker of hope return.
End of Chapter 1.
