Summer 'Sunny' Reynolds and her twin sister, Moon, had always been known as the "Sunshine Twins." The nickname fit them perfectly, but for different reasons. Moon was the more extroverted of the two, radiating warmth and positivity wherever she went. She was effortlessly social, always surrounded by a group of friends who adored her. In contrast, Sunny was quieter, more introspective, and preferred the comfort of her small circle of close friends over the chaos of large social gatherings. Where Moon was the life of the party, Sunny found her joy in the stillness of the night, stargazing and pondering the mysteries of the universe.

Despite their differences, the sisters were close, sharing a bond that only twins could understand. But while Moon thrived in the social scene at school, Sunny's world was more contained, centered around her three best friends, Eli Moskowitz, Martiza Sanchez and Demetri Alexopolous.

Sunny had met Eli in kindergarten. He was a shy, awkward boy with big glasses, sitting alone on the playground, tears streaming down his face. While the other kids played, Sunny noticed him and, without hesitation, walked over to sit beside him. She offered him half of her sandwich and started talking about her love for astronomy. Eli had been hesitant at first, but Sunny's gentle nature had soothed him, and soon enough, they were inseparable.

Demetri joined their duo in the fourth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher had made a mistake during the lesson, and Demetri, never one to shy away from correcting errors, had pointed it out with a confidence that bordered on arrogance. The other kids thought he was weird, but Sunny and Eli saw something different. They approached him during lunch, curious about the boy who wasn't afraid to speak his mind. Demetri, not yet understanding the nuances of social interaction, made an offhand comment about Sunny's name, wondering aloud why someone so quiet was named "Sunny." It had made her cry, and Demetri, mortified by his mistake, had awkwardly handed her some of his KitKats as a peace offering. That simple gesture of apology had been the start of their trio, and they'd been inseparable ever since.

Then they met Martiza Sanchez when they entered their freshman year of high school. She was new to the town moving from Colombia. Martiza didn't really know any english and Sunny was put as her buddy to show her around school—immediately, Martiza and Sunny became best friends and it was a package deal—Eli and Demetri had to be friends with her too. Martiza was quick to like Demetri and it was so obvious, but Demetri was blinded on his crush on Yasmine.

As they entered their sophomore year of high school, Sunny was content with her small, tight-knit group of friends. While Moon navigated the complexities of teenage social life with ease, Sunny was happy to stick with Eli, Martiza and Demetri, the only people who truly understood her.

But everything was about to change.
