Part 1

It doesn't happen often that all your family members get together. You're not a very close family, visiting your parents during the holidays is already enough. But it's not like you mind either. You would rather avoid your family and see them minimally. Because they always do the same thing.

Complaining about your life.

Complaining about your love life.

And complaining about why you can't be like your siblings.

Your older sister got married 2 years ago and is now pregnant with her first child. Your mother told how proud she was of her and that she was happy that she'd left a legacy.

But then she turned her head to you and her look and mood changed completely.

"When are you going to find someone to spend the rest of your life with?" She asked. Her eyes were wide open and she was clearly expecting an answer.

But you couldn't give her the answer she wanted. You have always made it clear to her that that is not the purpose of your life. That you don't have to have a man by your side and that you can easily be an independent woman.

But your mother lives in her own fantasy, for her life is like sunshine and roses. Because every time you told her that, she wouldn't believe you. She thought you just said that to get rid of her question and that you will live a life like the rest of your perfect family.

She has three children of which you're the middle one. An older sister and a younger brother. Your mother thinks that her children can live the same or a better life as her, because there is no other way for her. That doesn't go in her head and it never will.

So you don't know why you are now sitting at the table with your family. But you know that you don't like it and that you want to get away from here more than anything.

Because you know all too well that whatever is gonna be said, you will be your mother's disappointment again and that you will have to listen to her complaints. That has always been the case.

You take a bite of the pastry on the plate near you and listen to what has to be said. It was your brother who asked your parents to bring everyone together. So he will be the one who has something to say.

Your sister sits next to you and your dad on the other side.

He thinks completely differently than your mother. It's important to him that you're happy. And no matter what, he will love you.

Your mother is sitting right in front of you, so your vision is ruined and next to her your brother is sitting next to her to tell you the mysterious news.

"You know that I went to Paris with Tina last weekend?" He asks, your parents nod so you do the same.

You had completely forgotten about Tina. She's your brother's girlfriend, who he's been with since high school. With the fact that she's a beautiful woman, she is a total bitch. So no wonder she gets along well with your mother.

"How was Paris?" Your mother asks. You sigh and know that it will take another hour before you get back to the topic your brother started.

He talks about their trip there, which restaurants they went to and how they spent their days. You didn't know that your brother could be boring when he tells you that they mainly walked in the streets of the infamous city.

"But what I also want to tell you and that is why I have gathered you together." He starts. Finally... You can't wait to get back home, no matter what news he's gonna tell you.

"I asked her to marry me by the Eiffel Tower."

Well shit.

You're happy for your younger brother, you couldn't wish anything more for him. You want him to be happy and if he is with this woman, then you wouldn't recommend anything other than marrying her.
