Prologue - The Angel and the Wolf
.
I twist the sword in my hand, my wrist smoothly turning the heavy metal left and right. I toss my sword upwards a few inches and with easy, but quick reflexes I grab hold of the hilt of the sword and drive the sharp blade into the man's chest, pushing hard until the blade pierced thorough heart, bones, and skin. I stare into his shocked face, lips parting and thick coppery blood pouring out of his lips in waves. The light in his eyes fades a few seconds after and I pull hard to release the sword from the chest, blood splattering on my white pants and shoes.
A scream echoes from my left, the woman rushing towards me. Tears fell down her cheeks in waves, sobs leaving her lips shockingly loud. She drops to her knees before me, cradling the dead body at my feet against her. She wails loudly, my eyes moving away from her incessant screams and turn my eyes around the clearing.
I step away from the bodies and turn around to find the last wolf on my list. The hairs at the back of my neck react almost immediately and I spin around, sword ready, to see the woman lurch towards me, her body stretching and breaking, bones relocating and shifting into the large animals I'd constantly slay. The momentum she had was fast, but not as fast as my hands gripping my sword and meeting her halfway, a loud whine of pain breaking through her mouth.
Her furry body sank against my blade, jaws snapping towards me pitifully before sagging completely. I shake off her body from my sword and watch her drop lifelessly to the floor. I turn back around and make my way towards the end of the clearing, eyes moving around for the wolf.
The wolf had been battling my companion before I'd lost sight of them. My head snaps to the left when a soft glow gently curls upwards, the soft ball slowly rising and rising past the clouds before disappearing. I walk towards where it came from and my eyes see a familiar figure with white clothes in the distance, shiny blood coating his throat and arms. My eyes move to the left and my arms react instantly, my hand swinging the sword around to slice against the incoming attack towards my left.
The resounding yelp that meets my ears makes me turn towards the wolf and my eyes fall on my last target, the largest dark furred wolf yet was limping backwards. I turn my body towards him and watch the wolf snarl up at me, body pausing slightly before the ears flattened backwards and lips curling back in a snarl.
My eyes land on his and I find myself taking in the light sparkles flowing through them, a light that seemed to burn bright in those large hazel eyes. I don't see the lunge that wolf makes, my body not having time to react at the attack. It throws me backwards, my sword being kicked away from my hands. Surprise makes me pause as I'm shoved to my back, the wolf towering over me as it snarled into my face. I hadn't ever been snuck up on before, but I couldn't stop my eyes from unintentionally traveling back to those large hazel eyes.
My hand reaches out and I feel the hilt of my sword on the grassy floor, my fingers curling against it and swinging upwards hard. The wolf notices my attack and dodges it, allowing me to stand and grip my sword with both hands. I turn my head slightly trying to find the wolf and feel the lunge at my back. My body spins, the sword easily following my motion and I slice it upwards against the wolf's midsection.
It yelps as my sword cuts flesh, paws jerking as it pushed itself away from me. I follow the limp it makes away from me and see fur retracting, body turning back to human. My hands tighten on my sword and I use the tree to sneak around and attack.
I thrust my sword forward, the human head tilting back and warm hazel eyes meeting my own. My body freezes at the sight, my eyes locking against the intense pools of heat. My whole body seemed to have lost its ability to control itself.
