Chapter 1: The Arrival

The heavy iron gates creaked open as Sophie's car rolled up the gravel path, her fingers gripping the steering wheel tighter with each passing moment. The air felt thick with anticipation, and the sprawling estate ahead loomed large against the dusk, its sharp towers piercing the fading light. It wasn't the kind of place anyone willingly visited—especially someone like her. But the job offer had been too tempting to refuse.

For months, Sophie had been struggling to make ends meet as a freelance artist, taking whatever odd jobs she could. So when the message came from a wealthy client who had heard of her restoration work, she jumped at the opportunity. The offer was specific—an ancient family portrait, damaged by time, in need of careful and skilled hands. And the money was more than she had seen in years. All she had to do was spend a few weeks at the estate to complete the restoration.

Now, as the mansion loomed into full view, she wasn't so sure.

The house was ancient, built in the style of a gothic castle, with towering stone walls covered in ivy and windows that seemed too dark to penetrate. The windows reflected nothing, as if they were eyes staring back at her, vacant and hungry. Her gut tightened with unease.

As Sophie parked her car in front of the grand entrance, the door swung open before she had the chance to knock. A tall, dark figure stood in the doorway, his presence overwhelming even from a distance. His posture was perfect, almost too perfect, and he didn't move as she approached.

"Miss Archer?" His voice was deep and calm, but there was an edge to it, like someone suppressing an emotion they didn't want to show. "I'm Marcus."

Sophie's heart gave a nervous flutter as she took him in. He was handsome—impossibly so—with sharp features, a strong jaw, and stormy gray eyes that held her in place. His dark hair was neatly combed back, but there was something untamed about the way he looked at her. It was like being watched by a predator—silent, calculating.

She swallowed hard and extended her hand. "Yes, Sophie Archer. You must be Mr. Blackwell?"

He took her hand briefly, his skin cold against hers. "Please, call me Marcus." His lips curved into a smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Welcome to Blackwood Manor."

The air around them seemed to thicken as he stepped aside to let her in. Sophie hesitated for a split second before crossing the threshold, immediately enveloped in the mansion's cold embrace. The interior was as grand as the exterior—high ceilings adorned with chandeliers, walls lined with old oil paintings, and furniture that looked as though it belonged in another century.

"I trust your journey was smooth?" Marcus asked, closing the door behind her.

"Yes, it was fine," Sophie replied, though her voice felt small against the cavernous halls. She couldn't shake the feeling that the house was watching her, alive in its stillness.

Marcus walked ahead of her, leading her deeper into the mansion. "I imagine you're eager to see the portrait," he said without turning around. "It's in the west wing, just beyond the library."

Sophie followed him in silence, her footsteps muffled by the plush carpet beneath her feet. The farther they walked, the more isolated she felt. There was something unsettling about the house—it was too quiet. Every creak of the floorboards echoed through the halls like whispered secrets.

They reached a large set of double doors, which Marcus opened to reveal a vast library. The scent of old books and dust filled the air, the shelves lined with volumes that looked as ancient as the mansion itself. Beyond the library, another door led to a smaller room, dimly lit by a single window that let in the last fading rays of the setting sun.
