"Please, please, pleaseeee," I begged into the phone. "Nana, pleaaseee, let Lanie stay over," She sighed,
"Fine, but you both need to be able to get up in the morning." "Yay! Thank you!" I said excitedly, hanging up the phone, and running over to the fence of the football field.
"She said yes!" I yelled over the roaring crowd, giving her her phone.
"Yippie!" She exclaimed back. As we both walked over to the concession stand, which we were working.
"Hey ya'll!" Our friend, D___ said "Wanna come and hang out under the bleachers with me?"
"Oh, sorry, we can't, we have to stay here to help with concessions," I responded.
"That's okay! I'll stay here with y'all!" She says, "Why are y'all doing this anyways?" "We wanted to help so we could get money in our band accounts," L___ responds, "Plus It's homecoming, who wouldn't want to come?"
"I guess you're right." D___ yells over the last buzz of the scoreboard, signaling the game is over
"Oh, look at the time!" L___ said dramatically "Let's go see what our last minute jobs are," She said to me
"Okay! Bye D___!" I yell, walking inside the field house.
"Bye!" D___ responds
As L___ and I walked to where the coordinator was, she said to us, "Y'all are okay to go, thanks for coming!"
"You're welcome!" I said as we walked to the back of the bus barn, where my nana was going to pick us up. The air was cold and very still; my eyes were heavy and there were mosquitoes biting me left and right. Just as I set my stuff down on the ground to sit down, I heard the low rumble of the engine as my nana drove up.
"Your nana's here!" I heard L___ say, which woke me up from my tired trance.
We get into the car and I brace myself for the trashy 80's pop that my nana listens to. However, to my surprise, there was nothing!. No old country, no new country, no 90's rock, just silence, which was very nice by the way. As we drove home Lanie and I had some conversations, that was basically nothing, just tired stricken words.
When we got to the house, I fell onto my bed. As I was slightly drifting off Lanie found some of my old pillow cases in my closet
"Em! Look!" She says, holding the sheets. I pick up my head slowly, and my tired eyes light back up with energy
"Oh! I forgot I had those!" I say, jumping off my bed. "Do you have something in mind?" She doesn't answer me, and just slips it over my head.
"You look so goofy," She says, laughing. I decide to put my arms up into the pillow case, becoming one of those inflatable tube men at car dealerships, flopping around, and being silly,
"I shall be Mr. Tube Man!" I boomed, still flopping around. L___ laughed uncontrollably. "You must bow down to me!" I boom again. Lanie bows to the best of her ability, still laughing.
L___ had an idea, "Alexa, play music," She says to my black Echo Dot. As my Alexa played music, I danced, being silly, still in the pillow case.
As a few songs go by, I take the pillow case off, and look at the laughing girl in front of me, "Your hair is a mess," she laughs out.
"Well it's going to be," I roll my eyes, smoothing my hair out. "We should probably be getting to sleep," She looks at my alarm clock.
"Yeah, you're right," L___ says, pulling the blankets off of my bed and setting them on the ground where we will be sleeping. I helped her get the pillows off the bed.
"Wooh, I am tired," I say when laying down on the little palette of blankets.
"Yeah, so am I. Do you remember Emerson from kindergarten?" She asks, and of course I do,
"Yeah? What about her?" I responded.
"You had a girl with that name on your volleyball team, right? What if it's the same girl?" she says, not knowing that she started the conversation that would lead on for almost the rest of the night, at least until we fell asleep.
I barely open my eyes when the bright yellow beams of sunlight burn my eyes and I look over at Lanie who is already awake, and drawing in a notebook, "Good Morning!" She says, happily.
