"Chalo, bahar sab intezar kar rahe hain," Yasmine said softly as she approached Rubab. Unlike Ayesha and Shireen, her tone held no urgency or teasing, just gentle affection.

(Come on, everyone is waiting outside.)

"Sab kon?" Rubab's heart rate spiked as a strange sense of foreboding began to settle over her. Even in the cold of the room, sweat beaded on her palms, and her breath felt uneven, shallow. Her pulse thudded loudly in her ears as if matching the chaos she suddenly felt inside.

(Everyone who?)

"Sab ghar wale aur kon," Yasmine said, lightly touching her chin, smiling with warmth.

(All the family members, who else.)

Rubab's legs felt weak. Her mind raced, a tangled mess of thoughts and fears, and she shook her head frantically. "Hum... hum nahi ja rahe. Hum kahi nahi ja rahe." She shot up from her chair, pacing slightly. "Hum toh so rahe the, aur achanak se aap log keh rahe hain humari mangni hai, pata nahi kissey. Hum kahi nahi ja rahe, na hi koi mangni kar rahe." Her words tumbled out in a rush.

(I... I am not going. I am not going anywhere.)

(I was sleeping, and suddenly you all are telling me that I'm getting engaged, and I don’t even know to whom. I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not getting engaged.)

"Ab bas kardo, Rubab," Shireen's patience snapped, her irritation clear. When will her sister grow up?

(That's enough, Rubab.)

But Yasmine, sensing the storm inside Rubab, softened her gaze. "Rubab," she said gently, resting her hand on Rubab's shoulder, "Amma abba iss rishte se bohot mutamaeen hain, isliye raazi hue hain. Haan, thori jaldbazi ho rahi hai kyuki Azlan log parso chale jayenge. Isliye aunty mangni karna chahti hai."

(Amma and Abba are very satisfied with this proposal, that's why they agreed. Yes, it's a bit rushed because Azlan's family is leaving the day after tomorrow. That's why Aunty wants to do the engagement now.)

Rubab barely heard Yasmine's reasoning. Her fingers trembled as they clutched at the fabric of her dress, her knuckles whitening with the effort to steady herself.

"Hume toh lagta hai aunty se zyada aunty ke bete ko jaldi hai," Ayesha joked, attempting to lighten the mood. Shireen and Yasmine laughed, but Rubab felt a new flush of heat creep up her neck to her cheeks. Her heart seemed to lurch at the mention of him. Azlan. Her face burned, and she quickly dropped her gaze, suddenly very aware of the weight of the moment. She swallowed hard, struggling to control the whirlwind of emotions rising inside her.

(I think it's Aunty's son who's more in a hurry than Aunty.)

"Ab chalo," Yasmine’s soft yet firm words had silenced Rubab, but the storm inside her raged on. Accepting what was happening felt impossible.
