tate turned the dial louder on her speaker, sitting on her bed and humming along to the words. she pushed a strand of red hair behind her ear, holding a pen between her lips. she was trying to finish her math homework, but she kept getting distracted by her music.

not that she would turn it off, of course.

she needed that music or her thoughts would've swallowed her whole. she'd tried to work in silence before and it had ended in a panic attack which, of course, was due to thinking about matt. she truly hated him, but that didn't stop her from being upset over the whole situation.

they had been best friends. if one of them wasn't in school, the teacher was asking the other where they were. they were partners for every school project or assignment, they hung out every single day and tate practically lived at the sturniolo's place during summer break.

it didn't matter how many times she thought about it, there was never a clear answer on why he had left her, and the unknown haunted her.

''tate.'' her dad's voice became clearer as he reached the door, pushing it open. ''i'm sorry to be boring, baby, can you turn it down just a little bit?''

''yeah, of course.'' she replied, making her way to the speaker and turning the dial backwards. ''sorry.''

her dad frowned gently as he watched her sit back on the bed with a sigh. tate's mom had left them when she was only four, and that meant he was overprotective and worried for his daughter. his worry had decreased when she started hanging out with the triplets, but then they disappeared. tate explained that they just weren't friends anymore, that their were no hard feelings, but he didn't know if he totally believed her.

she had completely changed since going to high school. she had become even more gothic and dark, hung out with the same two people and even though she never told her dad, he knew she smoked cigarettes and weed due to the smell of her room. he knew that matt had hurt her...in the same way her mom had.

''how was school?''

horrible.

''good.''

he eyed her suspiciously. ''yeah?''

no.

''yeah, dad.'' she scoffed. ''why would i lie?''

''you speaking to matt again yet?''

tate almost laughed, but she managed to hold it back. her dad didn't understand. he assumed they had drifted apart and would find their way back to each other, but that just wasn't the case. matt bullied her - he had done for the whole of high school - and there was no forgiving that.
