chapter 2: the fleeing of a coven

"You can not let them know, Luci—"

"—Ana!" ]

{ warnings: mention/implied character death }

Luciana loved her mother.

The woman was the kindest, most generous soul Luciana had ever had the pleasure of knowing. She treated everyone with respect and helped all those that needed it.

Luciana hated her father.

He was selfish and unkind. He was rude and mean to others even if they were young children searching for food. He looked down on everyone and thought he was deserving of anything his heart desired.

Luciana wondered if she would've turned out like him if the witch purge had happened earlier. She wonders if she would even be alive if that were the case. If their town found out her mother was a witch.

Maybe all of them would've been dead.

"You can not let them know, Luci—"

"—Ana!"

The blonde woman blinked and looked up. Her sister was standing before her, frantic and a little bloody.

Right. They were running.

"Let's go! Get up, Luciana!" Elena shouted, grabbing her sister's arm and forcing her out the door of their home.

Her sister. Older and their mother's twin. They were similar in looks and personality, though Elena was a little more hot-tempered. She was Luciana's favorite person.

"What are we to do, Elena?" Luciana asked as she shouldered her bags, using a spell to make them feel weightless. They had little time to cram their belongings and everything that was thought to be needed on their journey.

"Micah said we must run. The hunters are aware of the whole coven," Elena replied, giving her little sister a hand onto her horse.

"But to where? Nobody will be kind to witches. That's why we had settled here so long ago," Luciana argued.

Elena sighed heavily and mounted her horse. "I do not know, Lu. We will figure it out. For now, we must leave," she said and smacked Luciana's horse from behind. The horse jumpstarted, galloping off. Elena's horse followed.

Luciana glanced behind her.

Smoke was still in the air, fire still burning at the stakes where their mother, the coven leader, had been murdered.

It says something that her father had been the one to light the ground with a malicious smirk on his face.

The rest of their coven is gathered and waiting when they arrive.

Micah is leading the charge, the man having been their mother's apprentice for years, even before they were born. He had grown to be like a brother to them.

"Are you two alright?" Micah asked as their horses came to a stop beside his.

Elena nodded, "we're alright, brother. Do you have a plan?"

Micah sighed heavily and nodded. "We're searching for a haven. I'm not sure where it is, but your mother said we'd know when we found it. I know it's not much, but for now, we must ride."

Luciana glanced at her sister. That wasn't a very airtight plan, but then again, none of them expected this turn of events. Nobody was supposed to figure out what they were.

"Let's go," Elena said, squeezing Micah's shoulder. He nodded and turned to the rest of the coven.

"Follow!"

Then they were all riding off.

They put as much distance as they could between them and their old home, placing spells to make it harder to be tracked.

[|] "Alright, let's saddle up, my friends. We must continue our journey," Micah said, standing at the head of their coven once again with Elena by his side.

"Well, looky here, boys!"

The coven tensed at the sight of a group of men, two on horses and the rest on foot, with guns thrown over their shoulders and knives strapped to their waists. [|]
