The echoes of battle still lingered in the cavern as Oswin, Doran, and Thalia rushed over to the limp body of Kyron. The once mighty warrior lay broken and lifeless, the infinity diamond that had caused so much pain and suffering now shattered and scattered across the rocky floor.
Thalia's steps faltered as she reached Kyron, her eyes filling with tears. She dropped to her knees beside him, cradling his head in her arms. "Kyron," she whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "Please, stay with me."
Oswin and Doran stood a few feet away, their faces etched with sorrow. They glanced at the lifeless form of Elysse, her body crushed by the beast's final assault. The weight of their losses pressed heavily upon them.
Thalia sobbed, her tears falling onto Kyron's face. "I'm so sorry," she cried. "I should have done more."
Suddenly, a faint voice broke through the silence. "Thalia," Kyron whispered, his voice barely audible. His eyes fluttered open to reveal empty sockets.
"Kyron!" Thalia gasped, her heart leaping with hope. She leaned closer, holding him tightly.
Kyron's lips trembled into a weak smile.
Doran knelt beside them, his face a mask of grief. "We're here, Kyron. We're with you."
Kyron's head turned to Oswin, standing a few feet away, and then back to Thalia. "The battle is over, but the cost... it was too high."
Thalia nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "You can rest now, Kyron. I promise."
A sigh escaped Kyron's lips, and his body went limp in Thalia's arms. She wept openly, her sobs echoing through the cavern. Doran placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his own eyes brimming with tears.
Oswin stood apart, his thoughts heavy with guilt and sorrow. As he looked at his fallen friends, a sense of foreboding washed over him. Thalia, still cradling Kyron, turned to look at him. She managed a weak smile, a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
But her expression quickly turned to horror as a shadow loomed over Oswin. The ground shook, and in an instant, Oswin was crushed under a massive, clawed hand. Blood splattered everywhere, staining the rocky floor. Thalia's shriek of terror echoed through the cavern, and Doran stood frozen in shock.
They looked up to see the giant being that had struck Oswin down. It resembled the beast they had just defeated but bore a haunting resemblance to Maele. The creature's eyes glowed with a familiar but twisted light, and its form was a grotesque blend of Maele and the monstrous power of the infinity diamond.
The deranged new form of Maele let out a guttural roar, filled with rage and despair. He looked at his former comrades, his eyes flashing with a mix of recognition and torment.
As the new and improved beast slumped through a wasteland of fire and destruction, his mind was a whirlwind of confusion and agony. The power of the infinity diamond had consumed him, turning him into the very thing he had fought so hard to destroy.
But the battle was over, and the damage was done. Maele's monstrous form moved through the desolate landscape, a tragic reminder of the cost of their struggle. He had become a symbol of their greatest victory and their deepest loss, forever haunted by the memory of what once was and the shadow of what he had become. A constant ache in the back of his mind reminded him that, if he had known the battle was over, he could have spared his friends the pain.
But now, they're dead. Everyone from the village and even beyond that, Maele's new form had torn everything down back to the roots.
