The open sea stretched endlessly before you, the horizon a blurred line between sky and water. Waves lapped against the hull, a rhythmic reminder of the vastness surrounding you. You stood at the bow, the wind tugging at your clothes and hair, the scent of salt strong in the air. The ship creaked beneath your feet as if it could feel the weight of this journey.
Behind you, Kian and Luka busied themselves with minor tasks, but even their usual banter had quieted over the days you had been at sea. There was an unspoken tension in the air, a shared unease that no one could shake. The decision to leave hadn't been easy, but once the choice was made, there had been no turning back.
Steve's warning still echoed in your mind. Herobrine. You never believed in curses or legends, but if Steve was right, it wasn't just a story anymore. It was your new reality.
A dangerous one.
You glanced over your shoulder, seeing the faint silhouette of your homeland, soon to be nothing more than a distant memory. You had sailed for days, the wind carrying you further into the unknown with each passing moment. The once bustling market, and the warm hearths of home, all felt like another lifetime. There had been no choice but to leave, no safety left in the world you knew.
Kian walked up beside you, his expression unreadable. "How much further do you think?" he asked, his voice low, as if not to disturb the stillness of the sea.
You shrugged. "We won't know until we see it. Steve's note said to head west, he didn't say how far.
"I'll come back for my shift, try not to break the compass, okay?" He said, stepping toward the stairs. You chuckled, then sighed, looking up at the clouds briefly.
Kian nodded, and you said nothing more. you didn't need to. The sea had a way of silencing even the loudest thoughts.
The ship groaned as it cut through the water, the sails caught by the wind. Luka made sure everything was in place, checking the ropes, adjusting the sails, anything to keep himself occupied, and Kian helped out the other villagers when possible, all to keep his mind occupied. But the farther you sailed, the heavier the weight of uncertainty became.
Luka, standing tall, looking out at the sea, his brow furrowed. "What do you think we'll find?" he asked, his voice drifting over to you. There was a strange mixture of curiosity and dread in his tone.
You didn't answer right away. Instead, you looked out at the horizon, where the sun had begun its slow descent, painting the sky in shades of orange, red, and gold. The vastness of the ocean felt endless, the unknown stretching before you like a challenge, daring you to keep going.
"I don't know," you finally said, uncertainty gnawing at you, eating you up on the insides. "But, let's pray we can build up something better,"
Kian chuckled, but it was humorless. "That's a start... It's my shift by the way."
He stepped over to you and grabbed the wheel, while you let go and let your hands relax at your sides. The three of you fell into a comfortable silence, letting the ship's slow, steady progress speak for itself.
As night fell, you found yourself gazing up at the stars, bright and unmoving in the sky. Their design was complex and fascinating, just like Kian and Luka, who were both those very things in their own way. Both of them you could rely on when everything else felt like it was slipping away.
