Azlan closed the wooden door of Naziya Khan’s room softly behind him, only to turn around and find his mother standing there, arms folded, her stern gaze fixed on him.

"Ammi, apne bulaya?" he asked calmly, tilting his head slightly.

(Ammi, did you call me?)

His mother’s expression didn’t soften. "Yeh naya kya shosha chorha hai apne?" she demanded, irritation lacing her tone.

(What is this new stunt you’re pulling now?)

Azlan took a seat on the edge of the bed. "Maine toh kuch nahi pakrha, chorhunga kya?"

(I haven’t grabbed onto anything, so what would I let go of)

Naziya stepped closer, her piercing gaze meeting his. "Azlan, pehle hi apki itni najayaz zidd puri kar rahe hain hum, ab yeh kya nayi demand hai ki Rubab se baat karni hai apko?” She shook her head, clearly exasperated. “Shareefo ke ghar mein hota hai yeh sab? Shadi se pehle larka larki ka baat karna..."

(Azlan, I'm already indulging your unreasonable demands, and now this new one, that you want to talk to Rubab?)

(Is this something that happens in respectable families? A boy and girl talking before marriage…)

Azlan looked up at her, perplexed. "Ammi, baat karne ke liye hi kaha hai, date pe le jane ke liye nahi, aap gussa kyu ho rahi hain?"

(Ammi, I only asked to talk to her, not take her on a date. Why are you getting angry?)

Naziya raised her eyebrows, sighing deeply. "Humare yaha larka larki shadi se pehle nahi milte aur aap yeh achhe se jante hain. Apne bhai ko dekhiye, Rukhsar se bachpan se rishta tay tha, aur bhale se unki khala ka ghar tha, lekin shadi se pehle woh kabhi khala ki taraf gaye nahi. Aur apko Rubab se baat karni hai."

(In our family, boys and girls don’t meet before marriage, and you know this well. Look at your brother—his marriage to Rukhsar was decided in childhood, and even though she was his aunt's daughter, he never visited her place before the wedding. And you want to talk to Rubab!)

Azlan couldn’t suppress a small smile. “Main bas iss liye milna chahta tha ki baat cheet karke uss din ki galat fehmi durr kardu.

(I just wanted to meet her to clear up the misunderstanding from that day.)

Naziya gave him a look that spoke volumes. "Uske liye unke maa baap hain. Yun hi uthake rishta nahi kar denge apni beti ka. Zahir hai unhe pata hai woh galat fehmi thi tabhi yeh mangni hui hai. Koi zaroorat nahi apko Rubab se milne ki ab." she added, eyeing him with a hint of suspicion, "Ek toh apka bharosa bhi nahi, koi ulti seedhi baat kardi toh."

(That’s what her parents are for. They wouldn’t have agreed to the engagement if they didn’t know it was a misunderstanding. There's no need for you to meet Rubab now.)
