( chapter five, accused )
❝ behind the hatred there lies a murderous
desire for love ❞october 9th, 1996
TATUM PARKED HER car at the police station, throwing open the door and rushing inside, with Kathryn close behind.
Kathryn's heart pounded, a mix of concern and confusion flooding her. Whatever had happened at Sidney's was clearly serious - possibly life-threatening. Her mind raced, but all thoughts vanished as soon as she saw a familiar figure being dragged out of the room they'd just entered.
Billy Loomis.
He struggled against the cops, shouting in protest as they pulled him further away from Sidney, who sat frozen in Dewey's desk chair. Tatum and Kathryn instinctively stepped back, their eyes locked on Billy as he fought to break free.
"Sidney, come on! You know me! Sidney, look at me!" Billy yelled, his voice desperate, straining for Sidney's attention. But it was no use. His gaze then shifted to Kathryn, his eyes widening in panic. "Kathryn! Tell 'em I didn't do it! Kathryn, help - please!"
Kathryn's breath caught. No, not Billy... it can't be. Her mind raced to the worst possible conclusions as she watched him disappear from view. She'd known that boy for two years since moving to Woodsboro. Sure, he had his moments of anger, but a... No. He wasn't capable of what was now racing through her mind.
Tatum's hand gripped her arm, pulling her toward Sidney, who was barely holding back tears.
The police station's noise faded into the background as Kathryn's focus narrowed. She needed answers. "What happened?"
Tatum shot her a sharp look - a silent plea that said now wasn't the time. But Kathryn couldn't wait. The not knowing drove her mad, inching her closer to a panic attack.
"Some guy called my house tonight," Sidney said quietly, her voice trembling. Tatum and Kathryn leaned in. "He... threatened me, said he was watching me. And then he..." Sidney's lip quivered, tears finally spilling over. She glanced up at Kathryn, her voice cracking. "He told me I would die... just like my mother."
Tatum quickly wrapped her arms around Sidney, whispering comforting words as Sidney sobbed. Kathryn, kneeling beside them, tried to process the shock of it all.
"He attacked me," Sidney continued between shaky breaths. "And then... Billy was there. He climbed through my window. He had... he had the phone, Kat. The phone in his pocket."
Kathryn felt a surge of disbelief. Billy? Part of her refused to believe it. While she and Tatum had been out, all smiles, Sidney had been fighting for her life - attacked by her own boyfriend, if what Sidney said was true, in which she prayed it wasn't.
Her thoughts spiraled. Why him? She couldn't wrap her mind around it. Billy loved Sidney. But then again, how well do you ever really know someone?
A few feet away, Sheriff Burke and Dewey spoke in low tones, their conversation drifting over.
"That ghost mask is sold at both Kroger's and Walmart," Dewey said. "Neither of them keep purchase records."
"What about the cell phone bill?" Burke asked, not taking his eyes off the scene.
"They're pulling Loomis' account," Dewey replied. "But it'll be morning before we see anything," he paused briefly. "You think he did it?"
Burke sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Twenty years ago, I would've said no chance. But these kids today..." his voice trailed off. "Damn if I know."
