Boys and Girls ages 7 to 12 explode out of school at the end of the day.  They all go running over to the store, "BILL I S CANDY STORE. A small shop. A single window is plastered with slogans: LARGEST STOCK OF CANDY IN TOWN. ALL WONKA'S CHOCOLATES.... FICKELGRUBERSFUDGES. SLUGWORTH'S BOILED SWEETS. SLUGWORTH'S PATENTPASTILLES. CHILDREN rush to the narrow entrance, jostling to get in. The children hold out coins as they overlap each other "Mr. Bill! Please, Mr. Billi. A Wonka Triple Cream Barr ... Mr. Bill! ... Mr. Bill! A Green Dragon, A Fickelgruber Juicy Bari." BILL dances back and forth, arms flashing, fingers deftly lifting the chocolates from the shelves.

"All right, all right! One TripleCream Cup for Christopher .•• ASquelchey Snorter for Otis ••• OneSizzler for Pretty June-Marie.And listen! Wonka's got a new one today! The Scrumdidilyumptious BariIt's a knock-out! You want to try it?" He smiles. A little boy struggles with his words "Scrum ... biblyunctions Bar! How does he do it?" Bill smiles "My boy, do we ask a fish how it swims? Or a bird how it flies? No siree, they do it 'cause they were born to do it. Like WillieWonka .•. He was born to be a CANDY MAN."

"What about his wife?" a little girl asks "Hm...Well, I heard that she is the inspiration for Mr. Wonka's chocolates. I bet the two inspire each other and make new ideas." The little girl smiles "I heard she's really pretty" Then a little boy speaks up "I heard she sweet as chocolate, that's why Willy married her" Bill smiles "No one seen the two in years though"

"Who can take the sunrise? Sprinkle it with dew. Cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two. The candy man. The candy man can" he sang as he grabbed candy "The candy man can because he mixes it with love, And makes the world taste good, Who can take a rainbow? Wrap it in a sigh" Bill continues giving the children candy "Soak it in the sun and make a strawberry-lemon pie. The candy man? The candy man" The children join in the song "The candy man can. The candy man can because he mixes it with love, And makes the world taste good. Willy Wonka makes. Everything he bakes is satisfying and delicious. Talk about your childhood wishes. You can even eat the dishes. Who can take tomorrow? Dip it in a dream. Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream?" He sang to the children "The Candy Man!" the children sang "Willy Wonka Can, The Candy Man Can. The candy man can cause he mixes it with love And makes the world taste good, And the world tastes good. Cause the candy man thinks it should" He finishes as the children eat candy.

CHARLIE is staring through the glass, nose pressed close. He is small and skinny and wears perhaps a home-knitted-much-darned jersey and short pants. Charlie walks off to the NEWSPAPER MAN, as PEDESTRIANS walk by. MR. JOPECK. is elderly, and warm-hearted despite gruffness.  "Hi, Mr. Jopeck •" Charlie smiled "Come along, boy, you're late."  MR. JOPECK picks up a bundle of evening papers. CHARLIE takes a big newspaper SATCHEL with EVENING RECORD written on it. He holds the satchel open while MR. JOPECK puts newspapers into it. "It's pay-day, Mr. Jopeck."  Mr. Jopeck takes two coins from the tin and places them in Charlie's hand. Le.tter continues to hold out a hand. "You promised me three." Mr. Jopeck sighs and points to the empty tin "Two's all I've got." Charlie gets sad, "Wait!" Mr. Jopek points in the air. Charlie lokes up. "I think there's another coming!.•• here it comest ••."

His pointing finger follows an imaginary coin through the air until suddenly, right in front of Charlie's face, the finger and thumb make a grab and pick a coin out of the air. "There!" Charlie accepts it, laughing." Off you go now. Say hello to your Grandpa Joe"

CHARLIE throwing newspaper into one doorway, then another. A RICH OLD LADY with a garden basket in hand is picking roses.CHARLIE, from the street, tosses a rolled-up newspaper high in the air, aiming carefully. In the garden, the newspaper lands neatly in her basket. She jumps, looking around.  One more normal delivery. NAKED VENUS, one hand outstretched before her. CHARLIEruns up and places a half-open newspaper in her hand in such a way it looks exactly as though she's reading it.
