tate walked into class, sliding into the seat next to the window. this was her first class of the day, and she already wanted to go home. people kept whispering or laughing as she walked past, some even shouting things at her. she ignored each of them, pretending it didn't affect her.

that's exactly what she was doing now. staring out of the window, pretending she couldn't hear harlow loudly explaining what had gone down yesterday despite everybody literally witnessing it. of course nobody cut her off - they just let her go on and on about how it was the funniest thing she had ever seen and how lucky she was to be dating macho matt.

''i heard he told you to back down.'' a guy suddenly grinned. ''you his lapdog, har?''

''fuck you, carter.'' she snapped. ''he didn't mean it like that.''

''i bet he did.'' carter pressed. ''he literally said back down...not even back off.''

''he was angry because of those weird girls! he didn't know what he was saying!''

''don't you think it's weird he told you to back down?'' carter continued, not at all phased by harlow's sudden anger and uncomfort. ''i mean...you were defending him against tate and he tells you to back down?''

''it was blair, actually.'' bella muttered.

harlow shot her a furious look before looking back at carter. ''what are you talking about?''

''i'm just saying...'' the boy shrugged, pushing back in his seat so that he was rocking gently. ''if my girl was arguing, i wouldn't be defending the girl i supposedly hate.''

''you don't even have a girl.'' bella said, rolling her eyes.

''and matt's with harlow but obviously has a thing for tate.'' he shrugged. ''i guess we're all lying about something.''

tate had been listening into the conversation, but she wasn't showing any emotion until that last line. she took a sharp intake of breath, and she prayed nobody heard it. she hated that people constantly spoke about her, but this was a conversation she had never heard before. matt having a thing for her? impossible.

''shut the fuck up!'' harlow exclaimed. ''matt does not have a thing for cemetery girl.''

''so why did he tell you to back down instead of her?''

tate could sense where this conversation was going and she tried not to make any sudden movements in the silence.
