"I THOUGHT YOU SAID IT WAS a house?" Eddie said as we piled out of my 1970's mint jeep wrangler, Dad pulled up in the moving van, as we stared up at a very empty church.
"It is a house, kiddo!" Mom cheered hopping out of her Honda Pilot and opening the trunk that held the other half of our luggage.
"It has a steeple, mom." I pointed out, gesturing towards the exposed bell at the top of the steeple. "It also looks haunted."
"This is some severe white people shit." My little brother sighed, making me laugh.
"How much you want to bet that one of our rooms was a scene of a murder?" I joked, nudging the younger boy in amusement.
"Twenty bucks, it's a double homicide."
"Deal." I agreed, shaking hands with him and earning a scolding look from our mom.
"No one died here, you two." She huffed, rolling her blue eyes as dad opened up the back of the van.
"Mom, I'm one google search away from finding out someone yeeted themselves from the bell tower." I joked, holding up my phone. "Churches close down for a reason and it's usually not a pg-13 reason."
"Don't think about it too much, or you'll get nightmares." She jokingly shrugged, before going to help dad unload the van.
"We're so dead." Eddie deadpanned, before following after mom.
I stared up at the stain glass window in curiosity for a beat, before joining my family by the moving van.
What I didn't see was a shadow peaking out from the attic window.

MOVING IN THE MIDDLE OF the school year is less than ideal. However, Eddie and I managed to get our rooms set up with a bit of teamwork and some tunes.
I was setting out my outfit for school tomorrow, when my dad walked into my room.
"Not bad, kiddo." He said, glancing around my new room. Band and movie posters were plastered on the gray walls, as well as pictures of my friends back in Oregon. "So, how does the place feel?"
Every house we've ever lived in has given me a vibe of some sort, good and bad. So far those vibes have been right nine times out of ten.
"It feels cold, like it's defensive." I muttered, my brows furrowed at my own words, as if I wasn't expecting to say that out loud.
"I'm sure it's just nerves, because of the whole first day situation tomorrow." He tried to reassure me.
However, if there's one thing I know about Nick Cromwell, it's that we're one and the same. Which means that I can read him like a book, and he's just as uneasy about this place as I am.
"Yeah, I'm sure that's it." I agree halfheartedly, figuring that it's better to focus on more important things.
"So, Chinese for dinner? Or I saw a Greek place downtown when we were driving in?"
"You know, I've been craving Chinese for days!" Dad exclaimed happily, before pointing to the hallway. "I'll see if they deliver to this part of town!"
My smile dropped as he left the room, a chill crawling up my spine as I eyed the closet. A milky blue eye stared back at me through the cracked open door, and muddy bare feet poked out at the bottom. The only thing I could hear was my pounding heartbeat and the drops of water falling from the figure in my closet.
