Liora's heart pounded in her chest as she hurried through the lush outskirts of Brisbane. She had promised Ronan she would meet him at the festival today, but something else had caught her attention. A white rabbit, small and delicate, had darted past her in the village square. Its fur was pristine, save for a curious red stain on its side that made her think it was hurt. Without thinking, she followed it.
Now, deeper into the forest than she had ever ventured before, Liora realized she had lost sight of the creature. The dense trees surrounded her, their branches swaying gently in the evening breeze. She stopped, scanning the underbrush. The rabbit had vanished, as if swallowed by the shadows.
"What am I doing?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I should go back."
Just as she turned to leave, a low, guttural growl reached her ears. Liora froze, her heart skipping a beat. The sound was followed by the unmistakable clash of metal and the deep grunting of a man fighting for his life.
Instinct drove her feet forward. She cautiously stepped toward the noise, brushing aside thick branches as she went. The sounds of the struggle grew louder—growls, snarls, and the heavy breaths of something... unnatural. Her stomach twisted in knots, fear rising in her throat.
Suddenly, she saw them.
A man, tall and powerful, was locked in a fierce battle with a massive panther. The creature's sleek black fur gleamed under the faint light; its teeth bared as it slashed at the man with razor-sharp claws. The man grunted in pain, stumbling backward as he fought with a bloodied sword, but he was losing. His movements were slowing, his defenses weakening.
Liora gasped, her eyes widening in shock. The man—though a stranger—looked strangely familiar, as if she had seen him before in another lifetime. His long, crimson hair whipped around him like fire, his sharp features striking, even in the middle of the battle. But he was injured, bleeding heavily from a deep wound on his side. The panther was closing in for the kill.
"No..." Liora's voice trembled.
Without thinking, she looked around desperately for something—anything—to defend herself. Her eyes fell on a fallen tree branch, thick and heavy. She grabbed it with both hands and ran toward the beast.
"Stop!" she screamed, swinging the branch wildly as she charged.
The panther's head snapped toward her, eyes glowing with a predatory intensity. Its claws lashed out just as Liora reached them, and she felt the searing pain of its talon slicing across her arm. She cried out, but didn't stop. She brought the branch down on the panther's back with all her strength.
The panther recoiled for a moment, and the man took advantage of the brief distraction, slashing his sword across its side.
Blood splattered the ground as the panther let out a monstrous growl, stumbling back. But Liora knew they weren't out of danger. She gripped her wounded arm, her breaths coming in sharp gasps, and looked at the stranger. His eyes—intense, golden—locked onto hers, and something unspoken passed between them. An energy, primal and raw.
The scent of her blood filled the air, and she saw his expression change, his pupils dilating as if some deep part of him had been awakened. He took a step toward her, staggering slightly, but before she could say anything, his body began to change.
Liora gasped as she watched him. His skin rippled, muscles bulging as golden fur began to sprout across his body. His form grew larger, more animalistic, until he stood before her, not as a man, but as a massive lion, majestic and terrifying all at once.
He roared, the sound echoing through the forest, and with newfound strength, he leapt at the panther, tearing into it with his powerful claws. The fight was over in a matter of moments. The panther lay lifeless at his feet, reverting to its human form in death.
