Springing awake, the bed creaks and you can't help but immediately cringe. Your chest heaves up and down while your head is soaked in sweat, wild hair sticking to your cheeks and neck. You grit your teeth when you feel the back of your shirt glue to your damp skin.
While catching your breath, your ears are met with the sound of helpless shrieking that is coming from the room across the hallway. The hallway light coming through the door window almost blinds you, your eyes taking time to adjust.
You glance over at Lily's bed, but she's in a deep sleep.
Quickly, you move out of the scratchy sheets and reach the window with an emergent stride. You're shocked to see a slew of orderlies working hastily in and out of the room.
You're not able to see inside the room, but you remember that the mysterious stranger is the one who must be hollering. Shivering, you also remember that he took joy in scaring you.
"The straps broke!" one orderly exclaims, but the voice is muffled through the thick metal barrier.
Did he break the restraints?
The man is incredibly hostile and dangerous, more so than the rest of the ward. At least you didn't have to be restrained almost every night. You begin to wonder how many times the man has been admitted into the ward as everyone else seems unfazed by his outbursts.
Still peeking through the window, you duck your head when you think a staff member looks your way, then slowly lift your head to watch some more. You quietly gasp when you notice the inmate staring back at you through the many arms working to keep him down.
Sweat beads his forehead, matting his dark hair to his skin just like yours. His matching dark eyes once appeared emotionless now seem frightened.
However, the more he stares at you, the more relaxed he becomes. The fear in his eyes fades away, and the corner of his mouth begins to lift in his usual smirk.
You're not able to tell if his fear had been real or if it had been a stunt to gain attention.
You wait a bit longer until all staff members leave the hallway, and the light in his room turns off. Assuming he's been sedated, you use a bobby pin Lily stashed away to unlock the door. The lock clicks and the door slightly opens.
You make sure to pause, double-checking the hallway before stepping onto the cool tiles. Standing on your tiptoes, you peep into his room and suddenly wash with an overwhelming amount of sadness.
He lays motionless on his bed with all of his limbs strapped down to the mattress; fresh, brown straps are tightly tied around his ankles and wrists.
