They were aboard the chariot, along with Piper, Leo, and Jason, while Butch held the reins and Annabeth adjusted a bronze navigation instrument. They soared into the air above the Grand Canyon and headed east, with the cold wind making them shiver. Behind them, more storm clouds were gathering. The chariot jerked and jolted. There were no seats, and the back was open.

Asia began to observe the new additions.

Jason had a mild and gentle face, but he looked a little sad. He kept staring at the horizon, not even noticing her. Piper looked nervous and lost in thought, with a worried expression, as if she knew she was heading toward certain death. Meanwhile, Leo couldn't stay still for a moment, always moving some part of his body, like kids when they're excited to go to an amusement park.

«This is cool, guys!» He spat out a feather. «Where are we going?»

«To a safe place.» Annabeth replied. «The only one for people like us. Camp Half-Blood.»

«Half-Blood?» Piper immediately became defensive, as if that word brought back bad memories. «What is this, some kind of joke?»

«It means we're demigods.» Jason explained. «Half god, half mortal.»

Annabeth turned to look at him. «You seem to know a lot, Jason. Anyway, yes, demigods. My mother is Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Asia is the daughter of Apollo, god of the sun and many other things—»

Asia interrupted her, «You could also mention the "many other things", like music, poetry—»

Annabeth cut her off before she could finish.

«I'm not going to list the "many other things". Nobody cares.»

«Blah blah, you're just jealous that my dad is god of more things than your mom.»

Annabeth ignored her friend and continued, «Butch, on the other hand, is the son of Iris, the goddess of the rainbow.»

Despite their occasional bickering, the two girls loved each other like sisters. After everything they had been through, who wouldn't?

Leo stifled a laugh. «Your mom is the goddess of the rainbow?»

«Why, is that a problem for you?» Butch retorted.

«No, no.» Leo reassured him. «Rainbows. Very macho

Asia felt like laughing but tried to hold it in.

«Butch is our best horseman.» Annabeth said. «He gets along really well with the pegasi.»

«Rainbows, ponies...» Leo muttered.

«Want me to throw you off this chariot?» Butch threatened.

«Okay, Butch, we're trying to save them, not kill them before we get to camp and this chariot is mine chariot.» Said Asia.

«Demigods.» Piper interjected. «You mean you think we are... you believe all of us are...?»

A bolt of lightning shook the chariot, and Jason shouted, «The left wheel is on fire!»

Jason was right: the wheel was burning, and white flames licked the side of the chariot. The wind howled. Asia looked and saw dark shapes forming among the clouds: more storm spirits were heading toward them, but they looked more like horses than angels.

«Why are they...?» Piper began to ask.

«Oh, the Anemoi take different forms.» Asia explained to her. «Sometimes they're human, sometimes they're stallions, depending on how they wake up in the morning. They're not very nice today. Hold on tight, unless you want to get thrown off!»
