tate sat in her best friend's bedroom, fully aware that she was talking, but not really listening. she was way too busy dealing with the fact she had a secret that involved matt, and she couldn't decide what to do about it.

she hated him and honestly, this was the karma he deserved. his perfect little girlfriend cheating on him - and not even with anybody particularly interesting or cool. carter literally had a permanent black eye because he couldn't keep his mouth shut. he smelt like cigarettes and cheap deodorant and would just skip his way through school.

basically, harlow leaving matt for anybody would be a blow to his ego.

but leaving him for carter? that was a blow to his ego, dignity and popularity.

and, on one hand, tate couldn't wait for it to happen. she would've known way before anybody else and when she saw the frown on matt's face and the betrayal in his eyes, she would love it. she'd love when he became the laughing stock of the school. she'd love to hear people whispering about the fact he got outdone by carter. she'd love to hear the rumours people made up about him being bad in bed or a shit boyfriend.

but on the other, tate knew what it was like to be a laughing stock, and she wouldn't wish it on her worst enemy...which was matt. she was also thinking she could maybe use it as bait. ask him to leave her, blair and dylan alone in exchange for information he would definitely want to know.

or she could blackmail harlow. she could tell her that, unless she started doing whatever tate wanted, she would tell matt. sure, harlow didn't love matt anymore, but she was sticking with him for popularity, and that meant she'd probably do anything to protect it.

the last option sounded the nicest.

and the easiest, because the other two involved speaking to matt, and that was literally the last thing tate ever wanted to do.

''tate.'' blair narrowed her eyes. ''you good?''

''i'm okay.''

''you were zoned out.'' she said gently. ''were you thinking about matt? i will literally kill him for you if that's what you want, baby.''

''no.'' tate laughed. ''i don't want you to go to jail over his loser ass.''

blair smiled, completely oblivious to the fact her friend was lying. tate hadn't bothered to tell blair or dylan about what she had saw. she was sure they would both want to tell matt just to spite him before spreading it around school, and she just wasn't sure she wanted that.

and so she was keeping it to herself.

''i was talking about halloween.''

tate perked up at that, deciding to forget about harlow and matt and all of their bullshit for just a few moments. she fucking loved halloween - it was the only time she fitted in. she could dress up and nobody would know who she was, or she could be herself and look the part anyway.
