It was a windy Saturday afternoon in BlackStone Ridge. First of October. The town was buzzing with whispers of the new family moving into town.
The leaves had started to change color & break off from the trees. The air was crisp. No one could believe there was a family moving into the house on Hurston Rd.
Not after the history of that place.
The Tate family had just pulled into the driveway, it was a seven hour drive & the family of six was exhausted by now.
Andrew Tate, the father of the family, had driven the U-haul. Emry Tate, the mother of the family, drove the van packed with their four children. The oldest son, Amir, is 17. The oldest daughter, Aeryn, is 16. The youngest daughter, Alana, is 15. Adonis, the youngest son, is 14. The family quickly exited the van, staring up at their new home.
"Wow this is actually better than I expected," Amir said, putting his hands on his hips. "Better than I expected too." Replied Mrs. Tate.
In all honesty when Mrs. Tate had heard about the price of the house, she figured the house would be shitty or almost rotting away. Why else would anyone sell such a house for such a low price?
It was a victorian house, two stories high, bay windows, a garden & a nice backyard.
"Home sweet home," Mr. Tate breathed in relief. He walked to the back of the U-haul truck & took off the latch, opening it up.
"Boys help me unload the truck." Mr. Tate said, motioning over Amir & Adonis.
The boys headed to help their father while Mrs. Tate headed inside the house to take a further look around.
Aeryn stood on the front lawn just staring up at the house, she felt uneasy. Something about the house was off, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
"Are you okay Aeryn?" Alana asked, placing her hand on her sister's shoulder. "You're getting that strange look you always get when something's wrong."
Aeryn broke her gaze from the house, running her hands through her black curls. "What look?"
"Um, when you furrow your eyebrows & squint your eyes like you're trying to take a shit." Alana said in a matter of fact manner making Aeryn laugh.
"Please, I don't look like that!" She replied while giggling, removing Alana's hand from her shoulder.
They shared another laugh before looking back up at the gray & white exterior of the house. "Let's go find our rooms okay?" Alana suggests grabbing Aeryn's hand & pulling her off into the house.
They walked inside, cold air hitting them immediately. It was a complete drop in the temperature.
"Oh god.." Aeryn said in disgust, scrunching her face & placing her hand over her nose. "What is that awful smell?" She muttered while Alana quickly pulled her hands over her nose, she could smell it too.
"It smells rotten." She commented, sounding stuffy due to her covering her nose.
They looked around the foyer. The house was beautiful inside, the stench however was not pleasant. The staircase was large, the ceilings were high & there was a huge fireplace.
"I'm opening the windows so the house can air out, that smell is foul!" Mrs. Tate said, coming down the staircase. She looked at her girls & smiled. "I bet you wanna have first dibs at the rooms," she nodded her head upwards, "Go ahead ."
