Location: SchoolThursday morning came with a buzz, the excitement at East Baton Rouge High only growing now that Kentrell's friends, Ben and BabyJoe, were regulars. Walking into first period, I tried to focus on English Literature, but my mind kept drifting to what the day would bring. The school's energy had shifted ever since the guys showed up.
As I settled into my seat, my phone buzzed with a message from Mia.
"Hey, are you coming to lunch early today? Ben and BabyJoe are planning to hang out in the courtyard. I want to be there when they arrive!"
I smiled, amused by her excitement, and replied, "Sure, I'll meet you there."
During my free period, I wandered the halls, but my thoughts kept returning to BabyJoe and his laid-back vibe. He was funny and easy to be around, and I was beginning to understand why everyone was so drawn to him.
When lunch rolled around, my friends and I made our way to the courtyard. The area was already packed with students, buzzing with energy. Ben and BabyJoe were there, surrounded by a crowd that seemed eager to soak in their presence.
Mia was practically bouncing on her feet. "Look at this! It's like a mini concert out here."
I nodded, my gaze landing on BabyJoe. He was deep in conversation with a group of students, his laughter standing out, making him even more magnetic.
Just then, Kentrell appeared beside me. "Hey, you made it! You're going to love this."
I grinned. "I hope so. I've heard a lot about BabyJoe."
Kentrell gave me a knowing smile and started leading me over to where BabyJoe was standing. "BabyJoe, this is Tori. She's been one of the most curious students since we got here."
BabyJoe looked up from his conversation, a genuine smile lighting up his face. "Hey, Tori. Kentrell's been telling us you're cool."
I felt my cheeks heat up a little. "Nice to meet you, BabyJoe. I've heard a lot about you too."
BabyJoe's eyes sparkled with amusement. "All good things, I hope?"
I laughed, feeling more at ease. "Definitely. You seem really chill."
He chuckled, the sound easygoing and warm. "Glad to hear it. So, what's your take on East Baton Rouge High so far?"
I shrugged, getting more comfortable. "It's been interesting. A lot of changes lately."
Ben, who had been watching the conversation quietly, chimed in. "Interesting in a good way, I hope?"
I smiled at him. "Yeah, definitely. The vibe around here has shifted a lot."
Ben nodded thoughtfully. "That's what we were hoping for. Always good to shake things up."
As we kept talking, I found myself enjoying BabyJoe's company more than I expected. Conversation flowed easily between us, touching on everything from school to music. His laid-back attitude made him easy to talk to, and I could see why Kentrell liked having him around.
Eventually, Mia, Ava, and Zoe joined us. Mia looked like she was in a daze. "Hey, Tori! How's it going over here?"
"Great!" I replied. "We were just talking about how different things feel around here."
Ava turned her attention to BabyJoe. "So, what's it like being the new guy at school?"
He shrugged casually. "It's different, but I'm vibing with it. People seem pretty chill."
Zoe, who had been quiet up to that point, added, "Well, you guys are definitely making an impression. Everyone's talking about you."
Ben grinned. "That's what we like to hear. We came here to shake things up a bit."
As lunch came to a close, I felt satisfied. The presence of Kentrell's friends had definitely changed the school's dynamic, but I was starting to like the shift.
On the way to class, my friends and I couldn't stop talking about the day's events.
"So, BabyJoe is as cool as he seems?" Ava asked, clearly excited.
"Definitely," I confirmed. "And Ben's pretty laid-back too. They both bring something different to the table."
Zoe grinned. "Looks like things are getting interesting around here. I can't wait to see what happens next."
As the final bell rang, I left school feeling upbeat. The arrival of Kentrell's friends had added an unexpected twist to my school life, and I couldn't help but wonder what else was coming.
