JOBE'S POV
⚲ 𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘐𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘊𝘈𝘔𝘗, 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗢𝗡

THE SHARP WHISTLES from the coaches pierced the air, cutting through the rhythmic hum of the air conditioner rattling outside the building. I lay sprawled on the grass, the blades poking at my skin as I tried to steady my breath. It felt as though my lungs were on fire, my chest heaving as if I'd just run a marathon. Sweat dripped down my face, stinging my eyes, but I didn't bother to wipe it away. Everything ached-my legs felt like jelly, and I couldn't remember the last time I actually caught my breath.

I tilted my head enough to glance around the field. Coach had the rest of the team running drills, barking out commands while the guys scrambled to keep up, their faces twisted in effort. Meanwhile, I lay there, staring up at the sky, a lazy idiot watching clouds drift slowly across the pale morning expanse, too exhausted to care.

The sun wasn't fully up yet, but it didn't matter. The heat clung to us, thick and sticky. Even the air felt heavy, as if we were all running through molasses. Everything-my clothes, the grass, even my thoughts was drenched in that oppressive warmth. Preseason was in full swing, and each day felt engineered to wear us down just a little more.

"Hey, Jobe, you might wanna-" Lucas started, but the warning came too late.

THWACK.

A football slammed into my face with the precision of a guided missile. Pain exploded between my eyes, my vision whiting out for a glorious second before returning in blurry fragments.

The laughter hit next.

A chorus of hyena-like cackles erupted around me as the team lost their collective shit. Pricks.

"Fuck-" I groaned, sitting up. The world tilted dangerously as I prodded my forehead, where an angry lump was already forming. Each heartbeat sent fresh waves of pain radiating through my skull.

Lucas jogged over, amusement dancing in his eyes. He dropped down beside me, shaking his head. "I told you to move!"

"Why are you yelling at me like it's my fault?" I muttered, still wincing as the throbbing in my forehead synced with my heartbeat. "You could've warned me earlier,"
