PART 1: EMBERS

The walls stand tall, the streets stand still

An air of safety from harm, yet cold and chill

No tempest, no hailstorm, nor rampaging flames

We're safe, we're secure, yet trapped all the same

"Stay here and be safe," my bretheren would say

"What need you of fish swimming beyond our bay?"

"All that you need is provided inside."

"Please. Leave ambition; come with us and abide."

But I dreamt in colors that they could not see

Saw a break in the stone where the city walls meet

I chiseled and hammered; slipped out, broke my chains

And abandoned my safety, but also my restraints

For what use are eyes if we don't use them to see

What use are mouths if we don't use them to speak

What use are ears if we don't use them to hear

What use is courage but to help conquer our fear
